The last time the US PGA Championship was held at the Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, Rory McIlroy ran away with his second major title.

The final major on the golfing calendar will return to Kiawah in 2021, the PGA of America announced on Friday, by which time world number one McIlroy will be a mere 32 years old.

McIlroy captured the Wanamaker Trophy in 2012 as a 23-year-old, rolling to an eight-stroke win in the first major held at the Ocean Course.

That year, the Northern Irishman shot a bogey-free 66 in the final round to set a record for largest margin of victory in a US PGA Championship.

The Pete Dye-designed Ocean Course also hosted the 1991 Ryder Cup.

"Ever since The Ocean Course was introduced to the world, it has been a supreme test for the greatest players in golf," PGA of America President Derek Sprague said in a news release.

"From a down-to-the-last putt thriller of a Ryder Cup in 1991 to Rory McIlroy closing a record-setting performance in the 2012 PGA Championship, there has never been a shortage of thrills on The Ocean Course.

"We anticipate that tradition of excellence continuing in 2021 at the PGA Championship."
