Current season of "The Voice Nigeria" is a stark contrast to its debut season

From dramatic judges to wrong song choices, the ongoing season of The Voice Nigeria is a sharp contrast to its 2016 premiere season.

It is 2017 and its sophomore season, but the show isn't what it was last year. The ongoing season of The Voice Nigeria is a contrast to its premiere edition.

Unlike the last season, there are not enough outstanding talents. Also, quite a number of talented singers were let go during the blinds and battles.

Remember Sandra Osamor? Her classical rendition of the National Anthem earned her four turns and a spot on Team Timi. Shockingly, she was eliminated during the battles because the judges had exhausted their steal option.

During the blinds, many talented vocalists sang their hearts out, but unfortunately, the coaches and their chairs were left unmoved.

Also, choosing the wrong song has been the downfall of this season.

For the first time last Sunday, I managed to watch the most boring episode ever of the singing competition.

From the performances to the judges' theatrics, viewers were left appalled. Thanks anyway to Team Timi and Yemi for trying to save the night.

Over the weeks, these contestants have improved their voice and stage skills. But something is still missing; the song.

Choosing the wrong song turns a great performer to a good or average one, and so far this season, most contestants have gone for songs that don't display their power, range and depth.

Take for instance J'Dess that chose to perform a rendition of Lil Kesh's "Because I Love You."She did try to give the song a passionate twist, but that wasn't enough to save her. Imagine if she had gone for a song that showed off her strength.

Let's not talk about the talented Afolayan that chose PSquare's E No Easy or Symeca that went for Michael Jackson's “Remember the time" or Kendris'Bruno Mars’s “24 Carat”.

Luckily for Precious, he made the right decision by singing Whitney Houston's "I have Nothing." This gave him an edge over Bada's 'Beautiful Girls' performance.

Imagine if Precious decided, just because he has a powerful voice, to show off with Rekaado Bank's "Problem." He probably would be home by now.

The singers on this season aren't the problem. Yes, they are not Brenda, Cornel, Arese, Chike, Dewe, Viveeyan, Nonso and Patrick. But they are unique and good enough to give us a satisfying season. If only they stopped going for the wrong songs and taking unnecessary risks.

Talented acts have been missed and lost during auditions, blind auditions and battles. And nothing that can be done about it.

However, a new episode airs this weekend and something can be done - more effort can be put into song choice and rehearsals.
