"The Shape of Water" wins Best Picture

Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy love story "The Shape of Water" has won the 2018 Academy Award for Best Picture.

The film won the top prize of the night at the ceremony which held on March 4, 2018.

The Guillermo Del Toro film defeated strong competition from films such as "Get Out," "Lady Bird" and "ThreeBillboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" to emerge the winner.

The award was presented by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, who were involved in the 2017 mix-up over "La La Land" and "Moonlight."

Receiving the award, Del Toro said, "I want to dedicate this to the young film-makers; the youth who are showing [us] how things are done.”

About "The Shape of Water"

Elisa is a mute, isolated woman who works as a cleaning lady in a hidden, high-security government laboratory in 1962 Baltimore.

Her life changes forever when she discovers the lab's classified secret -- a mysterious, scaled creature from South America that lives in a water tank.

As Elisa develops a unique bond with her new friend, she soon learns that its fate and very survival lies in the hands of a hostile government agent and a marine biologist.

Directed by Guillermo del Toro and written by del Toro and Vanessa Taylor, it stars Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Octavia Spencer.

Shortly before the Oscars, the family of playwright Paul Zindel  accused Del Toro of copying the premise of "The Shape of Water" from Zindel’s 1969 play "Let Me Hear You Whisper." Fox Searchlight has denied the allegations.

Having led the nominations list with 13, "The Shape of Water" also took home Best Original Score, Best Production Design and Best Director for Guillermo del Toro.
