'Sweet Mother' reportedly sold 13 million copies, making it the most successful single in Nigeria.

Released in December 1976, 'Sweet Mother' recorded by Nigerian/Cameroonian singer Nico Mbarga and Rocafil Jazz is regarded as 'Africa's Anthem' because of its immense success and popularity not only in Nigeria but in Africa.

'Sweet Mother' is recognized as the most successful single in Nigeria's music history having sold 15 million copies. Ironically the song was rejected by three record labels, EMI, Decca Records and Phillip Records for being too 'childish'.
It was picked up by an Onitsha based record label Rogers All Stars. When released in December 1976, it became a huge success.
In 2004 it was Africa's favourite song by BBC readers and listeners.
