“The highest level of vibration is love,”Wizkid tweeted in July, to a storm of response. That’s because it contains a universal truth that guides us all. Mankind is always seeking to connect with each other, and love enables that connection to happen, at different levels.

It’s a basic need, a piece of the human experience which all of our beings hunger for. That’s why when it combines with music, and is carried through sounds, vocals and imagery, it never grows stale. This is the driving force for music eras, where love is picked, dissected, expanded and commoditized via music for commercial effect. The best artists find new ways to incorporate it into their music.

Whether it is the ethereal connection that comes from studying the heart of another, or the carnal gratification that requires that bodies are objectified for the sole purpose of sensuality and lovemaking, musicians have always found new ways to plug it into their music.

Simi is a little goddess, spreading love one song at a time. Her entire creative ability on the mic is dedicated to spreading love, and expanding on the human propensity to seek it.

With Simi, love mostly comes out right, with sacrifices melding with hearts and attraction to create some of the best feelings which she captures. And when love isn’t bringing happiness, when it doesn’t make her smile, kick her boots off and stretch out in happiness, she still attacks it.

The singer and songwriter, Simisola Bolatito Ogunleye, popularly known as Simi wrote her first tune at the age of 10 and started singing and dancing in her early teens as a member of the teenage church choir. And although she had done gospel music, she always found herself returning to love.

“I feel like when other people are happy, I am equally happy,” Simi told All Africa. “This life is too short and we need to smile and be happy. I also know that the root of happiness is love which can be spread to loved ones.”

Love is in all of Simi’s music, whether she is chasing it, rejecting some advance, or wallowing in the radiance of affection. She uses it as fuel for all of her music, and it is the driving force that sneaks it into our hearts.

Check out Simi’s entire package as an artist. She does possess a paranormal vocal texture and quality that stands her out. This voice is her one, true instrument on which she builds everything else. The production of her music is crafted to elevate her vocals and act as an accessory. It is never the focal point of the delivery.

Away from the music, Simi is special because of the feelings she evokes in fans. Her petite figure, boyish charms, off the cuff humour, and her ability to throw herself into the engineering end of music, creates a potent combination, which fuses artistry, girl-next-door behaviour and crushing looks. She’s like the girl down the street that everyone loves because she has a smart mouth, kicks football and whoops asses on PS4.

And that’s why, when she sings about love, it’s everything coming together. The art, the persona, and the celebrity.

“I have so much passion for music, and I feel like people can sense it,” Simi tells Pulse. “When I am singing and writing, they can be a part of it.”

‘Tiff’ was Simi’s breakout record, and it was all about a lady in love, pushing the limits of expression. Jamb Question and ‘Soldier’ had her on the defence, refuting offers of love from her “Chemistry” collaborator, Falz. ‘Love don’t care’ is the ultimate song of inclusion and acceptance, while ‘Smile’ is a record of sweet nothings.

New song ‘Joromi’ flips the script, and shows her desperately wooing a man. She’s on the offence this time, throwing her love, heart and affection on a guy who is simply lapping it up, and falling for her. The visual by AJE Filmworks captures her comic and emotional quest, bringing more life to a dope record.

Simi’s new album “Simisola”  is on its way, and according to her record label X3M Music, it will be out in September. The project will provide fans an opportunity to experience her artistry in more ways than singles can allow. But we can already guess what would lead the way: Love!
