In 2013, SimplePay was named start-up business of the year by Seedstars World. On this episode of My Africa, Founder of the business Simeon Ononobi talks about the early days of the online payment portal.
After getting a call from the United Nations to go to South Korea for training on intellectual property, Ononobi was inspired to get more involved in the Internet world.
As the entrepreneur attempted to set up an e-commerce business similar to eBay, he was met with challenges when he tried to install a remittance system. His solution was to build his own payment gateway, hence the birth of SimplePay.
“It was accidental, 100% accidental, I didn’t plan on Simple Pay”, he said.
The real-time merchant transaction gateway has been in business officially since November 2013, processing 60,000 transactions every month, amounting to N100m ($500,000).
