All through the past weekend, Banky W slayed. From photos with his Aso ebi-clad friends, to picture-perfect moments, the EME boss was always on the timeline.
The singer and entertainment entrepreneur is getting ready to get married to his lover, actress , whom he has been dating for over a year. The duo have been the talk of the town ever since they publicly announced their engagement.
They are doing it big right now, with a huge celebrity wedding and plenty of news coverage. Their traditional introduction which held over the weekend feels like a bit of a star-studded carnival. There are celebrity friends, family, friends and fans, who turned out in full regalia for the ceremony.
Soon, all of the ceremonial processes would be concluded. The friends would go, the cameras would stop rolling, and slay season would officially be over. It’s at that point that the real marriage begins. And the couple would have to adjust to suit their careers.
Banky W is an artist. He is a great musician with a lovely discography, who is looking to add to that this year with an album titled “Songs About You.”
But he will soon be a married man, and a lot would have to change for his wife.
What happens when musicians get married? How do they cope with the demands of chasing a career in music, and marriage?
Being a musician is a tasking job. Unlike most traditional occupations, a musician is always working. From working their brain actively to find inspiration, to chasing the recording and production processes, the typical Nigerian artist has a huge amount of stress in their lives.
With the arrival of a wife, they have to split their time between the studio and the home. The recording process would have to be managed in a way where the musician finds time for his family. Previously, artists can sleep all day, and record all night. But a married artist will have to take his wife and her needs into consideration.
But certainly, studio sessions will be affected. Same thing as the video. But all of these can be worked around. The couple only has to reach an amicable compromise where the marriage and the music can meet half-way.
Outside the home, the other struggle lies in the content of the music, and how the artist will be perceived by the public. Being married means you have to edit and censor your lyrics in Nigeria. We live in a conservative society where people are held to a higher standards when they are married.
Nigerians would expect Banky W to take out completely, or at least tone down some of his racy content. No more sex on the beach, giving it to women, and seeing their backside like a barrel from heaven. No. It has to be less sexual and more about love from a purist angle.
That means, Banky W will have to compromise on his content. But judging from the wealth of his talent, and the depth of his songwriting, it’s easy work for him.
If anything, marriage will spur Banky W, to be a better artist, man and provider. He is building a life that requires him to be a provider for his family. His music and cinematography are his core businesses, and he will have to make them work, by making better music, shooting better videos, and renting out his equipment.
In all, Banky W is about to hit another level of artistry. I’m excited about his next project.
