There were two major no-shows at Apple's big iPhone event (AAPL)

Apple held its annual iPhone launch event on Wednesday, announcing three new phones and a new Apple Watch. But Apple didn't announce two key products a lot of Apple fans were anticipating: AirPods 2 and AirPower. The wireless earbuds and wireless charging mat, respectively, may still get a release date in 2018, however if Apple holds a MacBook event in October. Apple hosted its major hardware event on Wednesday, unveiling three new iPhones and a revamped Apple Watch — but there were two important products that didn't get a mention.

Apple fans were anticipating both an update to Apple's popular AirPods wireless ear buds, along with a release date for AirPower, the wireless charging mat Apple showed off at this time last year.

Neither product was announced or even mentioned at the event.

Apple introduced AirPods in September 2016, and they've since become one of Apple's most warmly received new products in years. Given that it's been two years since the first generation of AirPods hit store shelves, it seemed like prime time for Apple to release AirPods 2.

But the only AirPods appearance came in the form of the intro video to the event, which showed a woman racing to deliver an item to Apple CEO Tim Cook while wearing AirPods.

While AirPods at least showed up on screen, AirPower wasn't mentioned at all. Apple first gave a "sneak peek" of the wireless-charging pad a year ago when it announced the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. Applesaid at the timethat AirPower was "coming in 2018," and many assumed that meant at its 2018 iPhone launch event.

Still, there's a chance we may see these products before the end of the year. In past years, Apple has held an event in October to announce new MacBook laptops, and it could decide to roll out AirPods 2 and the AirPower then.
