Jerry Jones reportedly believes Roger Goodell lied to him about Ezekiel Elliott's suspension

Tensions have been rising between the NFL's commissioner and one of its most powerful owners.

  • Citing an unnamed source, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, believed the NFL's commissioner, Roger Goodell, had lied to him about running back Ezekiel Elliott's suspension.
  • Though Elliott was given a six-game suspension in August after an investigation into domestic-violence accusations, he has played in every game for the Cowboys as he appeals the punishment.
  • Jones has threatened to sue the league and owners to block Goodell's contract extension, The New York Times reported.

Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, believes the NFL's commissioner lied to him about the eventual suspension of the team's star running back, Ezekiel Elliott, Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported on Wednesday.

Citing an unnamed source, Hill reported that Jones felt that Roger Goodell had assured him Elliott would not be suspended and that Jones considered it "an unforgivable breach of trust."

Elliott was given a six-game suspension in August after a yearlong investigation by the NFL into accusations of domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend. Elliott was never criminally charged in the case, and he has maintained his innocence throughout.

Amid a series of appeals and injunctions, the Cowboys running back has yet to miss a game of the 2017 season, and the suspension is working through the court system.

Jones has vigorously opposed extending Goodell's contract as NFL commissioner. The New York Times on Wednesday cited three people as saying Jones had hired David Boies, a high-profile lawyer, and threatened to sue the league and some owners to block the contract extension.
