Sturgeon's dreams of a second Scottish independence referendum shattered by new poll

A new poll for the Scottish newspaper the Daily Record has shown that 60% of Scots are against a second independence referendum.

LONDON — Nicola Sturgeon's dreams of holding a second Scottish independence referendum could be at an end after a new poll found a large majority of Scots want her to drop her plans.

The Daily Record poll found that 60% of Scots want her to scrap her calls for another referendum with just

The findings follows the SNP's loss of 21 seats in last week's general election, which Sturgeon's party fought on a platform of holding a second referendum at the end of Brexit negotiations.

The independence referendum of 2014 was won by 'No' to independence, by 55% to 45% who voted 'Yes'.

Survation's poll found that if the referendum were to be re-run today, 'No' would win by a bigger margin of 57% to 43%.

Following her party's poor showing in last week's vote, Sturgeon said she would have to "reflect carefully" on plans for a second referendum.

Ruth Davidson, leader of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party, said that the proposed referendum was "dead".

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Sturgeon, the first minister of Scotland, said that "most of [the] media speculation about #ScotRef is nonsense".
