Lawyer says Trump feels 'completely and totally vindicated' by Comey's testimony

"The President is pleased ..."

President Donald Trump's private attorney, Marc Kasowitz, on Wednesday said his client felt "completely and totally vindicated" by James Comey's prepared opening statement to the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Comey's remarks, released Wednesday in advance of Thursday's Senate hearing, confirmed previous statements by Trump that Comey had told him three times that he was not personally being investigated amid the FBI's wide-ranging inquiry into Russian meddling in the election and the Trump campaign's possible ties to Russia.

"The president is pleased that Mr. Comey has finally publicly confirmed his private reports that the president was not under investigation in any Russian probe," Kasowitz said in a statement. "The president feels completely and totally vindicated. He is eager to continue to move forward with his agenda."

Comey's seven-page testimony released Wednesday, however, also portrayed Trump as having pressured Comey to ease the FBI's Russia investigation. It described a dinner in which, Comey said, Trump asked for his loyalty and another meeting in which Trump asked him to drop the FBI's investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Trump officially retained Marc Kasowitz as his outside counsel in May to represent him during the FBI's investigation into his campaign staff's possible ties to Russia. Former presidents have also hired outside counsel when their personal actions became the subject of an investigation, according to The Hill.
