Five things every African kid can relate to in a family

Being an African kid is a complicated process

Growing up in an African family is an amazing experience with so many unique happenings. I took a lot of that for granted growing up until i moved to the Unites States of America in my teen years.

That is when I realized the vast differences between my upbring and that of my friends. These are a few I wanted to share

1. Back talk is a no -no

I was always amazed by how my teen American friends could have verbal jousts, tantrums with their parents about just anything without fear of reprimand. The heavens be with you if you try this with an African parent you live with.

2. Accept guilt and save yourself

When facing an accusation of improper misbehaviour,it is always best to accept you are guilty and move on. Your parents will not buy a denial. The confirmation of your guilt is if you end up in tears.

3. Sunday attires are for your mother to pick

Sunday fashion is for your mother if you are a girl. Do not dare pick a dress that does not conform with your mother's sense of morality and style. You could end up being the topic of the sermon if you are not careful.

4. The chicken drumstick is for your father. Make that the best parts of the chicken meal

The chicken drumstick is not an option for an African child at home. You could have the neck, the legs, the back or the intestines. Everything else is beyond you.

5. Your participation in meal preparation affects the size of your plate

If you want a full stomach during meal times, you better be available during cooking. Your mother has a psychological measure of your contribution to the process and it will reflect in the dishing of the meal.
