The BBC broadcaster explores the past events of Africa from the beginning of mankind to the modern-era in a TV series titled “The History of Africa with Zeinab Badawi”.

In a bid to get a better understanding of the continent, Badawi travels across Africa interviewing African historians, archaeologists, and citizens whose stories highlight a clearer picture of Africa’s past and how it affects present day life.

The Sudan-born news presenter recently visited Lagos, Nigeria and spoke to Pulse at our Lagos office about her discovery, the inspiration behind her quest, and Nigeria.

Pulse: Despite colonization, education and the internet, why do you think the best-kept secrets of Africa are still hidden?

Zeinab Badawi: I think that throughout the centuries I think that Africa’s history has either been denigrated, overlooked or written by outsiders and this has resulted in Africa's history being written or being told by people who are other than Africans.

And I think it’s a result of the colonial era whereby western academics felt that Africa’s history really could only properly be told once the colonizers had arrived; when they began to document Africa’s history. There’s a tendency to think that just because there are no written records sometimes in African history that therefore Africa did not document its history. Africa did document its history but not necessarily in a written way. It may have been maintained through oral traditions, song, dance, music, art, you know many ways.

Pulse: Just looking at your background, you’ve covered stories in politics, current affairs, what made you decide to lean towards the side of history and decide it is time for us to tell the story of Africa and document it?

Zeinab Badawi: It’s true I’ve worked in news and current affairs for most of my career in broadcasting. I suppose doing something like this is a bit of an antidote to news which is very short lived, you do a story and the next day there’s a new story - it’s constantly displacing - one story is displacing the other.

Whereas with something like this, it stands the test of time. Once it’s done it’s there and it will be relevant I hope for many many years. But I did study politics and economics for my BA Honours degree, my post graduate masters degree was in history. And so I’ve always loved history.

Pulse: What has drawn you into telling these stories?

Zeinab Badawi: I think it was a series of events I think that brought me to this point, I recollect a conversation with my elderly parents many years ago and I had just come back from visiting the pyramids in Sudan. And I asked them what they knew about the pyramids and the monuments of ancient Sudan and they really couldn’t tell me very much and these are highly educated people, fluent in English, and had been educated in the British colonial system and they could tell you about key events in British history and yet here was their own and they hadn’t really got a proper grasp of it.

So I always thought there was a gap on television especially because obviously Africa is very beautiful and I wanted to show it in all its richness from a proper linear narrative chronology of Africa’s history.

Pulse: With your show "The History of Africa", what have you stumbled upon that has left you in awe of the continent?

Zeinab Badawi: Well I think that there's not sort of one big moment as such but what I would say is this: that what I have found most revelatory is the fact that African citizens connect with their past in a myriad of ways. And I think that that continuity of history is I think something which I find very striking. So be it in the customs, mode of dress, the indigenous traditional beliefs which actually scratch beneath the surface; somebody might say to you I'm muslim, I'm christian but actually they still are adhering to the religion of their ancestors or at least some of the customs and practices of their ancestors. So I think that what has struck me is that Africa is a very very complex continent. When you use the Western lens to look at Africa, it doesn't really help you understand the continent, there has to be a different perspective of looking at it.

So I think that was a kind of a cumulative effect but obviously some of the monuments I saw and artifacts were really very impressive.

Pulse: Did you explore any West African stories?

Zeinab Badawi: I did go to Senegal and a little bit here in Nigeria. I intend to do more of West Africa in the second series. But certainly I went to Senegal and of course, Senegal was part of the old Ghana empire. The Ghana empire of course has got nothing to do with modern day Ghana.

I did look at some of the burial practices and some of the tombs that exist in Senegal and obviously mention the Nok empire in what would now be the Jos Plateau of Nigeria - and the fine Nok statues which represent some of the best iron working that took place in Africa. It shows you with the iron working in the Nok empire, that iron working particularly in this part of Africa particularly in the west is something that probably existed over 2,000 years ago. So it’s an indication that there were sophisticated civilisations in this part of Africa but more of West Africa in the second series.

Pulse: Did you face any challenges navigating the different terrain and accessing a lot of these artifacts?

Zeinab Badawi: As you know operating in Africa is always a bit of a logistical nightmare because the infrastructure is not as good as it might be and I wasn’t just going to capital cities, I was going off the beat and track and so just getting around was difficult. And on the whole the necessary permissions were granted because I was looking at every country's’ cultural heritage every country I visited - of every country I visited. Of course there weren't clearly defined countries because I'd go so far back. Really you're talking about regions in Africa.

You know I start prehistory, the origins of humankind; there wasn’t a Nigeria until the 20th century for example. It’s a bit misleading to say a country’s heritage is such, but there were a lot of logistical obstacles. I think one fear that some people had expressed to me which didn't manifest itself is I chose to use local crews wherever I went so if I was in Algeria, I'll use an Algerian crew, in Sudan a Sudanese crew and that was a bit of a gamble but it paid off.

It could have been a disaster but the film crews were all highly experienced, very very talented technically savvy people - you know they operated drones with great dexterity, good eye hand coordination and I think it’s because Africa has got a young population. So they are more technologically savvy perhaps than some of their European counterparts working in the industry.

Pulse: Let's talk about “HardTalk” - what was the three hardest interview you ever had to do on the show?

Zeinab Badawi: I think somebody like Desmond Tutu would be quite difficult, why? Not because he’s an intimidating character, quite on the contrary. “HardTalk” is supposed to be holding somebody to account, and asking tough questions and so on. And his way of dealing with tough questions is just to diffuse them by just giggling and laughing. And that’s very disarming.

So when I said to him for example, President Mugabe has described you as evil, little, interfering bishop, he said, “did he really say that?” Then his shoulders shook with laughter then he said well you know I’ve been called worse things. And then sort of as an interviewer, you think where do you go from there because normally you would expect somebody to say how dare you say that about me or whatever. I think he was quite difficult from that point of view.

I found a couple walk out which of course is not ideal.

Pulse: Are you surprised at the growth of Nigeria in terms of economy and infrastructure?

Zeinab Badawi: I find that I’m always impressed when I come to Nigeria by the dynamism and the entrepreneurial spirit - you ingest it with your mother’s milk here in Nigeria.

It’s a very vibrant place and it is one of the giants if not the giant of Africa because obviously your population - one in five sub-saharan Africans is Nigerian. And I also think your diaspora is very powerful so I’m also reminded of that when I come here.

I think it’s a country which for me has always been moving in the right direction perhaps it’s doing so even more.

Nollywood actress channels sultry side in new pictures

<h1>&lt;p&gt;One of the highlights of the Nigerian arts and culture scene every
last quarter of the year is the Ake Book and Art Festival.&lt;/p&gt;</h1>

The
event returns again this year in Abeokuta, Ogun State from November
14 -18, 2017.

For Ake Festival, the event organised by Book Buzz
Foundation is a gathering of artists, actors, creatives,
dancers, illustrators, musicians, novelists, poets, and other
enthusiasts. It's a convention for people to learn, connect and
celebrate the African arts.

It all started with an idea from
Nigerian author and festival director Lola Shoneyin in 2012 and
it’s grown to be a must attend event for art lovers from all over
the world.

“It’s got a lot to do with my experience as a writer, as
an African writer, as a Nigerian writer, you’re going all over the
world, to Europe, to the States and you’re talking about your
country, you’re talking about Africa, you’re talking about your
culture, you’re talking about your people but often you are talking
to a sea of white faces", she said.

“And there’s nothing wrong with
that but how much better would it be . . . I mean this was my
thinking six years ago. How much better would it be if African
authors, African creatives can actually talk to Africans”.

For
Shoneyin, it was all about creating a space for lovers of African
arts and culture with the aim to create an exchange between the
audience and speakers.

“It’s just creating a safe space where you
can have a lot of creative, a lot of influencers and thinkers in
the same space but critically to have such an event, such a safe
space on African soil”.

This theme for this year’s festival - “This
F-Word and conversations” focuses on women especially female
creatives in Africa doing remarkable things.

Shoneyin revealed to
Pulse the theme for this year’s festival was actually decided three
years ago.

“Because it was our fifth anniversary, we had decided
that this year was going to be about women - we were saying it from
like three years ago that when it’s our fifth anniversary, this one
that we bring all these people from Africa, from all over the world
to this place, when it's our fifth anniversary, it’s going to be
women and about women,” she said.

The 2017 edition is set to
feature an incredible line up of talented women and men including
Ghanaian poet and novelist Ama Ata Aidoo, author Ayọ̀bámi
Adébáyọ̀, feminist activist Charmaine Pereira, South African
novelist Diane Awerbuck, Professor Femi Oyebode, British-Eritrean
author Hannah Azieb Pool and many others.

“A lot of things are
happening in fives - five musicians, five artists, five poets
(female), so it really is about celebrating women and of course our
fifth anniversary”, the author shared while speaking about the event highlights.

Nigerian- American fantasy and science fiction
author Nnedi Okorafor will also be gracing the festival.

“Nnedi
Okorafor is coming and we are so excited about that especially
because she’s doing this a day with Nnedi Okorafor that we are
organising which we think is really fabulous”.

The Ake festival
hosted on the rocky hills of Abeokuta will include activities such
as art exhibitions, book chats, film screenings, a musical concert
panel discussions, poetry performances, a stage play, storytelling
sessions, and a tour of the historical environs. Since inception
the festival has been held in Abeokuta.

“Because what we wanted Ake to
be: is to be in Abeokuta, to have its own space in Abeokuta. We
didn’t want to move it out of Abeokuta because Ake is actually a
place in Abeokuta - that’s where Nobel laureate professor Wole
Soyinka was born and so we wanted it to be there,” Bitrus shared.

“But we have other festivals that we organise in different states.
For instance, this year we organised the Kaduna book and arts
festival and then we have other ones we are planning which you will
hear about next year. But for now Ake is alway going to be in
Abeokuta”.

The festival organiser, Lola Shoneyin credits the event’s
 buzz and tempo to “lots of social media activity”.

“But I think the
most critical parts of organising the festival is actually the
planning stage. We try to start organising it way ahead of time -
as soon as the festival is over, the next month, we start planning
the next one,” she said.

This year's festival focuses on women especially female creatives in Africa and beyond doing remarkable things.

Lola Shoneyin talks arts, culture, literature as event celebrates fifth anniversary

<h1>&lt;p&gt;While Nigeria is focuses on diversifying from
oil, fighting against corruption and showcasing our talent to the
world, it appears we are lagging behind in closing the parity gap
between men and women in their contributions to society.&lt;/p&gt;</h1>

According
to data released in the Global Gender Gap Report by the World
Economic Forum (WEF), Nigeria comes in at 122 out of 144 countries. The
report explored and ranked the progress of gender-based disparities
in different countries particularly in Economic Participation and
Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and
Political Empowerment.

“The rankings are designed to create global
awareness of the challenges posed by gender gaps and the
opportunities created by reducing them,” the World Economic Forum
posted on its website.

However since the WEF started tracking this
ten years ago, the international organisation revealed that for the
first time things didn’t look so good.

“A bad year in a good
decade: the World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report 2017
finds the parity gap across health, education, politics and the
workplace widening for the first time since records began in 2006”,
it shared in a press release today November 2, 2017.

“A total of
68% of the world’s gender gap is now closed, with the reversal
driven by declining gender equality in the workplace and political
representation”.

The
education and contribution of women is important for the growth of
any economy.

“We are moving from the era of capitalism into the era
of talentism. Competitiveness on a national and on a business level
will be decided more than ever before by the innovative capacity of
a country or a company. Those will succeed best, who understand to
integrate women as an important force into their talent pool,” said
Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman, World Economic Forum.

In the list of top 10 countries who’ve been able close
the gap, Rwanda is the only African country which makes an
appearance. Namibia and South Africa make it in the list of top 20
countries.

“Sub-Saharan Africa displays a wider range of gender gap
outcomes than any other region, with three countries; Rwanda (4),
Namibia (13) and South Africa (19) in the global top 20, as well as
many of the lowest-ranked countries in the Index, such as Mali
(139) and Chad (141). Of the 30 countries from the region covered
by the Index this year, 13 countries have increased their overall
score compared to last year, while 17 have seen it decrease”, the
reports regional analysis revealed.

Nigeria comes in at 122 out of 144 countries in the 2017 Global Gender Gap Report by the World Economic Forum.

Nigeria fails to close widening gender gap even in 2017

This year’s fashion week showcased a runway of plus size labels all
in collaboration with About That Curvy Life at the LFDW 2017 event
held at the Eko Atlantic, Lagos on October 26, 2017. The About That
Curvy Life collective was made up of three designers including
menswear brand Assian as well as womenswear designers Osuare and
Nori.

With his spring/summer collection Assian created a
sprightly vibe with his pieces. Playing with a colour scheme of
black, white and navy blue, the models marched out in shirts, wrap shirts, kaftan, long sleeve jacket, sleeveless jacket and pants.

There were interesting combinations in the designer’s showcase such
as a pair of loose purple sequin pants paired with a navy blue wrap
top which was modelled by Nigerian-based 
Italian chef Benedict
and a white oxford shirt paired with a wrap shirt with frayed
fringes and matching pants with fringes on the side.

However, the
real standout piece was a streetwear inspired monochrome jumper
with a loose skirt.

Osuare is a mastermind of
alternative style with her presentation. The womenswear label opts
for dark skinned plus size models adorned with pink hair.

The
collection was made up a palette of baby blue, pink, red and green
prints. The models strutted down the runway with artistic makeup
dressed in embellished artsy print details on dresses, kimonos,
blouses and pants.

With two particular pieces, it seemed as though
the line by Egbuonu Osuare was inspired by the formal tuxedo as she
merges black and white into the scheme of her colourful
composition.

In their showcase, Osuare pulled out a winning card by
using popular media personality Tolu ‘Toolz’ Oniru-Demuren as one of their
models.

With long curly auburn hair, Toolz stepped out in a long
flowing gown with a plunging neckline.

Nori uses pink and black
to make bold statements with her collection.

As the models strutted
out dressed in Nori and a signature pink braid the energy could
be felt. There was just something powerful and edgy about this
presentation.

The collection included body hugging pieces which
flattered the curves of the model. It consisted of pleated dresses,
dresses with cutout details, peplum, a jumpsuit and cigarette
pants. Nori’s was found by Uga Akinbode.

&lt;p&gt;Once again this year, the Lagos Fashion and Design Week
2017 featured a diverse catwalk of male and female plus size models.&lt;/p&gt;

full swing. The event wasn’t just about the models on the runway
but also the street style and what the popular celebrities were

Nigerian actress Genevieve Nnaji stepped out
to the fashion event on October 28, 2017. The actress nailed it in
an all-black high fashion look.

Spring/Summer 2018 collection of P.O.C has been revealed at the Heineken Lagos
Fashion and Design Week 2017.&lt;/p&gt;</h1>

The menswear fashion brand was showcased
on day two of LFDW, October 26, 2017. The collection channeled an easygoing, mirthful
vibe.

P.O.C’s presentation at Eko Atlantic, Lagos was made up of colourful
pieces including casual tracks, co-ord sets, overlay tunic, slim
pants, as well as a fringed shirt and a long print shirt.

With most
of the outfits with the overlay tunics, the models wore 
shirts matching the colour of their pants. This mix and match gave the audience an idea of the
wearability coordination of each outfit.

The designer played with a
palette of bold colours including blue, red, orange, peach, green,
and brown.

To accessorize their looks, the models all wore open toe
sandals while some of them wore long beaded necklaces over their
outfits.

P.O.C presents a spectrum of colour on fashion runway

<h1>House of Kaya opened up the catwalk at the 2017 Heineken Lagos Fashion and Design Week on October 26, 2017.</h1>

The designer showcased conservative significant fashion inspired by Northern Nigeria. The simplicity of the designer’s pieces was shown as models walked effortlessly on the runway in Eko Atlantic, Lagos.

The collection consisted of kaftans and gowns including a mix of different colours and fabrics like ankara. The dresses were made of up compelling details like appliques, pearls and embellishments.

In order to make this garments inclusive in the contemporary world of fashion, House of Kaya went for two-toned garments, frills, flowing sleeves, print details, and belts.

As models strutted on the runway all with different kinds of head wraps, the atmosphere was set with an up tempo northern soundtrack.

House of Kaya was found by Ibrahim Aminu eight years ago.

Kaftans, flowing gowns and a mix of different colours and fabrics, were showcased at LFDW by House of Kaya.

<h1>Orange Culture and Davido have presented their collaborative</h1>

Models strutted the runway in pieces carrying an 'IF' embossed detail in easy, ready to wear styles at the LFDW runway at Eko Atlantic in Lagos.

As Davido’s pop single ‘If’ played in the background, the models filed out onto the runway one at a time in an urban style including t-shirts, oxford shirts, jumpers, bomber jackets and a pinstripe co-ord set.

The singer also graced the runway to take a bow and thank the audience. This moment came a surprise to many and it was evident as the room when in an uproar at the singer’s appearance.

Visualise and think positive thoughts about each day. You can start your day with a mantra of positivity.

Eat a healthy balanced diet. Exercise.

Feeling mentally and physically exhausted from work can affect your productivity, social life and even your health.

What to do when you feel burnt out

<h1>You’re a talented actor, musician, entertainer, entrepreneur or even a social media star whos finally gained public recognition. Now you’re famous - what next?</h1>

Reality is you continue living life but bare in mind you'll have fans, supporters, critics and haters - all with expectations from you. Depending on what your special skill is, your fame could also come with a lot of press coverage and mainstream exposure.

Singer defines elegance in this green dress

<h1>Nallem Clothing was one of the African designers to showcase their creative pieces at the recently held African Fashion and Design Week (AFDW) 2017.</h1>

The Ghanaian fashion brand showcased its new collection on October 15, 2017 at the fashion event held at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos.

The outfits presented by Nallem Clothing offered a modern contemporary touch to African inspired clothing for men and women.

For women the brand showcased dresses embellished with print, matching head gears and scarves. There were co-ord sets comprising of tunics and pants. An urban twist was given to the menswear with solid colours and prints.

The new Nallem Clothing collection is stylish, traditional and infused with a modern touch. The essence of the fashion line was channeled into its runway pieces.

“Nallem Clothing creates clothing for the urban professional; a combination of elegance, creativity and style embracing the essential elements of African culture and tradition, hence our slogan – the confident urge”, is how the designer describes itself on its website.

The AFDW held on October 13 - October 15, 2017. The event showcased fashion designers from Nigeria, Ghana, London, Thailand and the United States of America.

The collection comprises of sheer blouses and dresses, blouses, dresses and impressive matching sets with delicate fringe, tassels, and statement cuts.
