Netflix was founded in 1997. Founder and Ceo Reed Hastings created a video rental service that delivered movies to people's doorsteps with no late fees rather than going to the film store to buy one. It was just like Jeff Bezos’s Amazon. And it was moderately successful. However, it wasn't until 2007 that Netflix solidified its position as an online video streaming service. Although the option to order a rental was still viable, people preferred the instantaneous feeling of streaming films on a revolutionary model, The internet. Then $5.99 per month bought subscribers six hours of streaming even if the film options were highly limited. But no other company was doing this, and that put Netflix the pioneer of the digital streaming model that has dominated television till this very day.

But where did Netflix go wrong over the years? And why is their position being threatened by relatively new streaming platforms? Here are five reasons:

Netflix has been home to some of the best television series, and movies in the last few years. Whether it is House of cards, Stranger Things, 13 reasons why, Queen's gambit, Money Heist or last year’s South Korean sensation Squid Game. But even these big titles from Netflix are getting by the well-executed and marketed productions from Disney+ in partnership with Marvel. Or the blockbusters HBO max is making with DC.

<h2>Controversial business decisions</h2>

Netflix is crumbling under the pressure to make big films and is desperately searching for solutions. In finding these solutions, it is making some terrible business mistakes that are making the audience have second guesses.&nbsp;

Probably done to improve the budget for film production and marketing; Netflix announced early this year its plan to hike the prices of subscription plans which raised eyebrows. Mainly because it wasn't as if Netflix was suddenly providing more content. In fact the opposite, as it announced it will be pulling back content to save budget. Yes, a price increase may help boost the figures in the short term, but in the long term, people will start questioning if their service is even worth the extra amount. However, the true turn off was when Netflix announced its decision to crack down on password sharing which has been a feature that drew people to the app in the first place. After 15 years, cracking down on password sharing is not the ultimate solution to salvage Netflix's plummeting stocks. And even if they want to further increase the price, account sharing and price splitting was the feature that will shield them from cancellation. Netflix could have easily blamed the need for price increases due to the global inflation post-COVID-19 and the recent geopolitical crisis. But it justified its reason, ‘to be able to produce more quality more content’ which Netflix also said it wanted to pull back. A little bit confusing.

Yes, original content is costly to make. The final season of the upcoming Stranger Things cost about $270 million, Disney+ spent $225 million on Wanda Vision, while Amazon Prime just created the most expensive show in television history The Lord of the Rings: The ring's power which amounts to $465 million. But the issue is not with the production cost, but what is done after all that money is spent. This leads us to No.3

<h2>Lack of adequate advertisement and poor marketing</h2>

After a great ton of money goes into film production, Netflix has a terrible history of adequately giving the show proper advertisement, before they churn out another film to compete with it. When you are launching a new series or movie every day, there is little budget to go around for advertisements. There is little home screen space to dedicate to the film’s thumbnail. Because of this, subscribers are bombarded with a fleet of titles with no clue what is worth watching. Netflix has not been expertly selective about the titles it puts out. And even when they do, bare internal and external media promotion for the film/series is done. Netflix is putting too much trust into its algorithm and it is failing them.

<h2>Release schedules of television series</h2>

Another category in which disney+, apple+, and others thrive and Netflix is not utilizing to its advantage is the release schedules of the new series. Netflix drops all its series at once. While some viewers would prefer binge-watching an entire series of Bridgerton on the go. Netflix does not realize that by doing so, they eliminate the chance of their series remaining the talk of the media and dismissing the free promotion that comes with it. For example; when Disney+ released its Hawkeye, Wanda version, Loki, all episodes were released over two months. Or when HBO released Euphoria over a month plus. During this time, YouTube channels, and film analysts, churned out content, based on speculations, and theories about the next episode. This model of release schedules not only creates an avenue for free promotion. It also triggers FOMO on social media; people who do not even watch the series will be compelled to do so before the series finale.&nbsp;

But considering Netflix's 'released all at once' norm, the only thing 'media talk' can come up with is an expectation for the next season. A good Netflix show will have high spikes of interest upon its release, but then receive a rapid fall of interest in the next 24-76 hours. Let us not forget that Netflix is conscious their viewers binge-watch content, which indirectly puts pressure on themselves to release more series that end up being commercial flops.

<h2>Unmerchandisable intellectual property</h2>

The intellectual property of Netflix’s biggest shows does not transcend beyond the screen. The shows are watchable but they are not built for merchandise, cosplays, action figures, and Halloween costumes. Unlike Disney+'s marvel titles, or HBO max's character which has unique merchandisable features that make money and at the same time keeps the show relevant in pop culture. A good example of merchandisable Disney+ has utilized over the years and has greatly profited from culturally and commercially, is Baby Grogu.

Recently Netflix lost over 200k subscribers. If a survey was to be made, it would be one of these major factors. However, all hope is not lost, for Netflix to bounce back some changes must be made. Reed Hastings and the Netflix team must make some bold changes. Netflix still remains a streaming giant, but first it must acknowledge there is competition for its viewership and adopt the models that are working for them, in reverence to objective film consumption behavior that is on the rise.

Disney+, Hulu, Apple TV, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, Paramount+ and others are all competing for supremacy, and it is no doubt Netflix is lagging in the streaming race; But why.

Whether it was at movie premieres or Big Brother Naija, old-Nollywood themed parties were all over the place, causing positive ripple effects on its appeal.

Most female characters, portrayed by Genevive Nnaji, Oge Okoye, Ini Edo, Rita Dominic and more are now perceived by the Gen-Zs as feminist personas that were way ahead of their time. Considering these characters' daring non-conformity to Nigeria's old-age conservative and sexist culture, it only seemed right to recall the first group of young girls who were unapologetically themselves in any system they found themselves in.

The brainchild of celebrated author Mario Puzo, the film is considered the crowning achievement of Francis Ford Coppola's directing career. With intriguing depth, it provides audiences with a glimpse into the notorious underworld of warring New York crime families. As a result, The Godfather transformed a number of relatively unknown actors into Hollywood legends, among them being James Caan, Al Pacino, and Robert Duvall (all three of whom were nominated for Best Supporting Actor). In addition, Marlon Brando turns in, arguably, the most memorable performance of his career.&nbsp;

The film opens as Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) hosts his daughter's wedding, where he actively entertains his friends and business associates. Directed by Ron Howard, the Hollywood veteran behind such memorable films as A Beautiful Mind and Cinderella Man, this adaptation of Dan Brown's religious thriller is 149 minutes of monotonous exposition and tedious European spy thriller cliches. What makes Brown's novels so popular is the narrative background on such subjects as cryptography, secret societies, religious orders, and alternative history. But it is difficult to translate such ideas to the big screen, and it's here that The Da Vinci Code fails as a commercial thriller.&nbsp;

The scenes are composed of lectures on the history of Christianity and the life of Leonardo Da Vinci. Michael Crichton has a similar style of writing that focuses on scientific breakthroughs and cutting-edge technology, but his novels adapt better to the big screen. Whereas Jurassic Park briefly lectured audiences on the inner workings of DNA, then quickly jumped to two hours of dinosaurs terrorizing people. The Da Vinci Code keeps explaining, hypothesizing, and lecturing only to leave its audience hanging. The ideas are intriguing, but they make for a far better novel than a silver screen blockbuster. Minus the interesting conjecture, the film is nothing more than a poorly written 1970s drugstore spy thriller.

Tom Hanks plays the lead role of Robert Langdon, a Harvard professor of religious symbology lecturing in Paris. When Jacques Sauniere (Jean-Pierre Marielle), curator of the Louvre, is found murdered and strangely positioned in his famous museum, local authorities initially consult Langdon for his expertise. But the professor soon learns from Saunieres granddaughter, government cryptologist Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), that he and the prime suspect are the same.&nbsp;

Creating a diversion for the police, the two discover a hidden trail of clues created by Sauniere in the moments before his death, clues that just might lead them to the most elusive treasure in human history, the Holy Grail. With Interpol hot on their trail and the true murderer still at large, Langdon and Neveu enlist the help of Grail historian Leigh Teabing (Ian McKellen) to teach them the history of the Grails protectors, The Priory of Scion, and to help them uncover the endless clues that promise to unravel a 2,000-year mystery.

Despite the remarks of most critics, Hanks's performance is not atrocious. Although his character is bland at best, he wasn't given much with which to work. Robert Langdon's lack of development is more attributable to poorly written dialogue and poor choices in direction. Ron Howard tries to cover up some of the excessive dialogue with visual images, but the narrative is still narrative even with flashback sequences. Audrey Tautou delivers her lines well but suffers from the same constraints as her Academy Award-winning screen partner. The only shining performance is provided by Ian McKellen as the eccentric and charming Grail expert, Leigh Teabing. Some of his one-liners add a bit of comic relief, but they are only band-aids on the gushing head wound that is this film.&nbsp;

In the end, The Da Vinci Code is a lesson on the distinction between two different mediums. Movies haven't replaced books, or vice-versa, for a reason. Sometimes, it is just better to read the book. In the case of The Da Vinci Code, this is one of those moments.

Hans Zimmer creates an original score that is second to none in cinematic history, and Elton John's hit single 'Can You Feel The Love Tonight' swept the nation upon the film's release. With powerful and often mesmerizing visual sequences, the use of a timeless plot device, and brilliant direction, the film will stand the test of time as one of the best movies ever produced.

The Lion King takes place in Pride Rock, a serene jungle paradise on the African plain. In Pride Rock, every animal lives as part of a harmonious ecosystem, ruled by the greatest animal of all, the strongest and wisest lion, King Mufasa. When Mufasa's wife gives birth to the lion cub Simba, the young heir's Uncle Scar begins plotting the overthrow of his brother and the taking of the kingdom by force. Forming a conspiracy with a pack of wild hyenas, Scar's evil plan is to lure Simba and Mufasa into a valley where the hyenas stir up a herd of wildebeests which end up trampling Mufasa and leaving him clinging for his life on the edge of a cliff. With Mufasa's life hanging in the balance, Scar seizes the opportunity to send his brother hurling to a bloody death.

With the king gone, and Simba too young to defend the kingdom, Scar and the hyenas ascend to power. Pride Rock is soon reduced to a desolate wasteland as its newest rulers ravage the landscape, while Simba is forced into exile. Fleeing to a faraway land free of predators, Simba befriends Pumbaa and Timon, a warthog and meerkat who live carefree lives feasting on grubs and insects. But as time passes, a chance encounter reunites Simba with his childhood destiny. Can Simba return to Pride Rock and reclaim his rightful position as king, or will he succumb to the temptations of an easy life, free from conflict and responsibility?

Widely considered the greatest animated film in Disney's arsenal, and certainly the best of the computer-generated era, The Lion King is a cinematic masterpiece in any medium. If one tends to shy away from animated films as childlike or simply just not a cup of tea, one would be well advised to make an exception for The Lion King. It's quite simply an extraordinary epic, replete with dazzling choreography, well-blended musical scores, and characters the audience loves to root for. In one particular scene, the Disney animators' use of Leni Riefenstahl's patented camera angles to capture the hyenas marching in lock-step under the singular review of Scar creates an abundance of subconscious images reminiscent of Hitler and the Third Reich. This illusion plants a manifestation of evil in the mind of the viewer that is instantly connected to Scar and his evil intentions.

&nbsp;That is the type of symbolic and all-engrossing power Disney utilizes in this wonderful masterpiece loved by children, yet a deeply probing and breathtaking film for adult audiences. A perfect ten over ten movie!.

A cross between Toy Story, Superman, and Office Space, it provides an endless array of action sequences, visual creativity, and well-delivered humour. Director Brad Bird (who’s directed a few episodes of The Simpsons) not only creates a memorable film but also voices one of the star characters of The Incredibles, Edna Mode. Following in the rich tradition of animated classics such as Bambi (1942), Beauty and the Beast (1991), and The Lion King (1994), Walt Disney Pictures teams up once again with Pixar Animation Studios (with whom it collaborated on Finding Nemo) to produce a film both children and adults will love with equal verve and passion.

The Incredibles is set in the fictional cartoon township of Metroville (a hybrid of Superman’s two homes, Metropolis and Smallville). Metroville is home to several miraculous superheroes who do everything from hunting down evil murderers to saving cats stuck in trees. Foremost among the superheroes is Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) who resembles Superman in both strength and style. Shortly after Mr. Incredible’s marriage to the vivacious Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), a surge in civil lawsuits and other unwarranted torts are brought against the superheroes by the people they save, who cite numerous damages to their person as a result of being saved. The rash of legal action, and the strain it places on the local governmental budget, turn the tide of public opinion against the superheroes and force them underground.

Harboured by the government witness protection program, Mr. Incredible has assumed a new identity – that of Bob Parr, an ordinary middle-class suburbanite who works as an Insurance Claims Specialist. Cowering in his cubicle, Bob Parr must deal with the typical travails of a 9-to-5 job, a boss he hates, and regulations he feels are immoral and hurtful to the company’s clients. Meanwhile, Elastigirl is now known as Helen Parr, and she’s grown comfortable in her new role as a housewife rearing the couple’s three suppressed-superhero children – Violet (a shy girl with the ability to turn invisible), Dash (a cocky boy with the ability to run super fast), and Jack-Jack (a baby with no as-of-yet-known superpowers). All goes well until Mr. Incredible, anxious to return to a life of helping people, is approached by a super-secret government organization hoping to enlist his aid. When it turns out to be part of an elaborate conspiracy hatched by the evil Syndrome (Jason Lee), a former Mr. Incredible sycophant turned bad, Elastigirl and the entire Parr family must risk blowing their cover to save Mr. Incredible, and the world, from certain doom.

The Incredibles deserves a spot on anyone’s list of the Top 100 films ever made. It is that good. The musical score, composed by Michael Giacchino (known for his work on Alias), sneers at today’s digital multi-track recording in favour of the old-school analogue recordings of the 1960s in its effort to recreate the jazz-orchestra ambience often associated with the golden age of comic books. This attention to the form and detail of the story sets the tone for The Incredibles. And that’s why the film is an absolute must-see. Its meticulous blend of sound and visuals, coupled with an utterly hilarious – if not ingenious script – makes The Incredibles a solid contender for the best film of the 2000s.

It's amazing because it's probably one of the top ten best films ever produced. Based on Stephen King's short story Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, the film transcends the typical intellectually and spiritually bankrupt Hollywood entertainment of the modern era with onscreen artistry that is the closest we will probably ever see to poetry in moving pictures. With masterful performances by Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, audience members will find themselves engrossed in a tragic story wrought with suspense at every turn.

The Shawshank Redemption focuses on the life of Andy Dufresne (Robbins), a prominent banker convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Sent to Shawshank prison in the summer of 1947, the inmates bet on which of the new arrivals will be the first to crack. Ellis Red Redding (Freeman), an institutional fixture and the man who can provide anything for a price, puts his money on Andy. But much to his surprise, Andy doesn't make a sound.

Over time, Andy and Red develop a close friendship, and Red procures a small rock hammer for Andy. As the years go by, he procures other items as well, the most interesting being Rita Hayworth. Red acquires a poster of the screen siren for Andy, and business continues as usual in Shawshank. Along the way, Andy ingratiates himself with the notorious prison guard Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown) and Warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton). Putting his outside skills to good use, Andy provides tax advice and tax preparation services to guards not just at Shawshank, but in other prisons as well.

Eventually, in exchange for a comprehensive prison library, he ends up running a massive money laundering operation for Norton leveraging prison labour in exchange for lucrative kickbacks. But all goes awry when Shawshank's newest prisoner, a young punk named Tommy (Gil Bellows) comes forward with shocking information. Andy, who spent twenty years in Shawshank prison, might be innocent after all. The revelation ruins lives and destroys Andy's prison sanctuary, but it's Warden Norton and his associates who are ruined when the beautiful pin-up Raquel Welch reveals her hidden secret.

Thomas Newman's musical score, reused in countless films in the years since its release, blends with brilliant casting, memorable screen performance, and masterful set design to create an unmatched and timeless epic.&nbsp;
