The president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, has described Edson Arantes dos Nascimento, popularly known as Pele's contribution to the growth of football, as ineffable.

The departed Brazilian football legend's death was announced by his manager after battling Colon Cancer.

Pele won three FIFA World Cup titles, scored 1,279 goals in 1,363 games, and&nbsp;died in a hospital in São Paulo, Brazil on Thursday at the age of 82.

“I have read so many condolence messages and tributes to the man since he left us, but the truth is that Pele’s contributions to the game of football are ineffable. He did so many things to raise the game's profile and scale, and each and every one of us can only say a little of what he did.

“I remember that he came to Nigeria five times and identified strongly with black people all over the world. He was a universal figure, yet he remained humble, likeable and approachable. With his skill and talent, he took the game of football to a different level, captivated global audiences and gave joy to billions. May his soul rest in peace.”

<h3>Pele’s Visit to Nigeria</h3>

The Football legend visited Nigeria over Four times during his lifetime. His first visit was in January 1969, during which his Brazilian club Santos FC played a friendly with a Nigeria XI that ended 2-2.

He also visited the giant of Africa in February 1969 for a Santos FC Vs Midwestern XI friendly courtesy of then Military Administrator of Midwestern State, Colonel Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, who sponsored the return of the club from a tour of East Africa to the tune of £6,000. The match at the Ogbe Stadium ended in a 2-1 win for Santos.

He was on a tour in 1976, sponsored by Pepsi Cola, and again in 1978 on another sponsored tour that included another Brazilian club, Fluminense. His last trip to Nigeria was in October 2000, when he met with then Nigeria Minister of Sports, Damishi Tonson Sango.

Pele died after battling Colon Cancer, he died at the age of 82.

He added that Pele built bridges which he used to connect the world together.

“He had an enormous generosity of spirit and humility despite his greatness as a footballer and sportsman.

“He also built bridges across nations, races and even religions. He was a UN Ambassador of goodwill. Pele is gone but the world will never forget him. RIP. “

Ahead of the commencement of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Season, the Interim Management Committee (IMC) has given the clubs the to complete their licensing before the year ends.

IMC is the body responsible for organizing Nigeria's elite football league.

20 clubs will participate in the 2022/23 NPFL

In a circular to all NPFL clubs, signed by the Head, of the Legal and Compliance Department, Uche Egbe said that the deadline for club licensing is December 28th

He warned clubs that failure to meet the deadline will see the clubs be barred from participating in the league.

He also announced that the draw for the 2022/2023 league season is December 28 in Abuja.

According to the circular, "Note that the deadline for completion of the club licensing exercise for the 2022/2023 season is 28th December 2022. Consequently, any club that fails to meet the minimum threshold of compliance with the club licensing requirements will be barred from participating in the league.

"All affected clubs are therefore directed to take appropriate steps to rectify the noted defects to their application process to avoid being foreclosed from participation."

<h3>NPFL to start January 8 - IMC</h3>

Meanwhile, IMC Chairman, Gbenga Elegbeleye, has confirmed that the league will start by January 8.

He added that it will be broadcast live on television beginning next season.

“The NPFL will be on NTA (Nigeria Television Authority), as we have an assurance from them. For cable networks, it might not start with the first few matches, but later in the season.

“The league will start January 8, 2023, with draws for December 28 on a 100 percent abridged format, any club not ready might decide to leave.

“We won’t owe any referee for next season despite inheriting N500M referees' debt,” Elegbeleye said during an interview on Television

The Nigeria federal government has fulfilled its promise of gifting houses to 1994 Super Eagles players.

FG fulfilled the 28-year-old promise giving keys of a three-bedroom bungalow each to three 1994 Super Eagles players and others.

The beneficial of the house from 1994 set are; Mutiu Adepoju, Ike Shorunmu and Finidi George, and then team doctor, Akin Amao, who also received his house key.

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, presented the keys to the players at the project site, in Akinyele Local Government area of Oyo state.

Fashola, was represented by the Federal Comptroller (Housing Sector), Gbolahun Adesola, said that the Federal government fulfilled over 28 years.

He said, “The beneficiaries are among the first set of Nigerians including the 1994 Super Eagles who would be handed keys to their houses that was promised by the Federal government over 28 years ago.

“We have entered a season of completion and handover of keys to beneficiaries in 35 states and the FCT to Nigerians who have successfully subscribed through the open ministry’s website for the sales of these completed houses.”

The 21st edition of the National Sports Festival tagged "Delta 2022" is ongoing in Delta state with 36 states and Abuja battling for medals in 38 games.

The committee is headed by the Director of the National Sports Festival &amp; Para Sports Department of his Ministry and Secretary of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), Mr Peter Nelson.

“We knew then that if Delta would not make it, Abuja was ready. At this point, six states are jostling and the interest is increasing. There is a timeline. We know when a State is not ready and if that happens, we will just switch over to the runner-up,” he added.

The boxer in the bout received a punch in the chin from Anambra’s Gaby Amagor in their 86kg category, and the referee stops the bout.

Borno State coach, Endurance Aberegidi, has blamed the medical team for the death of Igboanugo, saying that instead of the medics treating him they were busy looking for his coach.

The coach who witnessed when the boxer was knocked down, said, “It was a pathetic situation. This guy trained for years and after getting a national opportunity, he then dies in the ring.

“I was in the ringside when he fell and the medics rushed in and tried to revive him. He slightly responded and they took him to the emergency unit, then they asked for the boxer’s coach.

“I walked up to them and they told me that the boy was not responding to treatment. They were looking for the coach for over 20 minutes as the boy was not responding to treatment. I don’t know why they wasted so much time treating the boy. They should have focused on treating him. They said the boy didn’t allow anyone to treat him and after a short while, they came back and said he had given up the ghost,” he said.

Meanwhile, Secretary General, of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, Akinyele Durotoye said the boxer was fit before the bout.

He said, “He was well and okay and did not show any sign of distress, his coach was with him but stepped out to get some equipment momentarily, unsuspecting the boxer was in danger. It’s one of those tragedies we see at sports venues with athletes having underlying health conditions. Unfortunately, we lost him, but his death has nothing to do with the bout.
