Remember Aarinola Olaiya who broke 28-year-old record in  Surgery department, she has told us she has an almighty formula that can defy all odds.

She recently granted an interview and she said everything about how she broke the record.  So, from her point of views, there are five rules that helped her to become the most celebrated medical student in OAU at the moment.

1 Focus and Determination:

Aarinola attributed her academic success to these two qualities and we cannot agree less. Most of the best graduating students in Nigeria always attribute their academic success to Focus and determination, and if it works for them, it can work for anybody Just stay focused and determined.

Talking about these two, she said "I always like to have a goal in mind and I make sure that I focus on that goal without giving room to distractions. I think this is what happened. Right from the day I was admitted into the university, I made sure that I remained focused in my studies."

2. Spend most weekend studying

Going by Aarinola's rule, students who believe Saturday is for Owambe will likely not graduate with distinction if they are in the six departments mentioned above.

Aarionla said she spent most of her weekend studying, and she did this with so much energy.

"Weekends were very important to me. I spent most weekends studying. The higher I went in medical school, the more time I created to read my studies"

3. Don't party,  don't club and don't take alcohol.

This is a three-in-one rule that Aarinola imposed on herself to break the jinx in the Surgery department. Any student whose eyes are on the best prize especially in Geology which is said to be a worst of them will need to shun three habits. Otherwise...

"I never had time for parties. That wasn’t my idea of leisure. I just went out with my friends to eat and then, we would have fun during the day before returning to the hostel.

"We went out to eateries to have lunch, take pictures and so on. We didn’t go to clubs or drink alcoholic .

4. Have friends who are purpose-driven:

Remember our parents' proverbial advice about the kind of friends to roll with in University? Aarinola seemed to have followed her parents' advice on about campus friends. She chose students who are as purpose-driven as she is.

"I had just a few friends in the university. They were all purpose-driven people who knew where they were heading to".

So if you want to graduate with first class in one of those departments, choose a friend who shares your goal.

5. Have a boyfriend/girlfriend but never allow the relationship distract you.

Having a boy or girl-friend in University seems inevitable. It is a three-unit course many undergraduates don't like to carry over.

However, Contrary to the belief that eficos don't have boy or girl friend, Aarinola said she has a boyfriend and the relationship did not erode her academic performance.

"I have a boyfriend, but I never allowed him to come between me and my studies. He does not live in Ile-Ife. So he visits me in school sometimes. Most of the time, we communicate to each other via the telephone."
