10 pictures that show the terrible state of education in Nigeria

Declaring emergency in education is long overdue and we need to remind the constituted authorities of the rots and terrible states of our schools.

The 20-year-old activist and Nobel peace laureate in a meeting with the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo asked the vice president to declare state of emergency in education sector"because the education of the Nigerian girls and boys is really important"

Perhaps that sounded like a child's talk in the ears of the Nigerian government because no step was taken to correct the anomalies in the sector since then until all academic unions began to threaten to paralyse the sector and render tertiary institutions in the country useless with strikes.

It was then it dawned on the government to heed the voice of Malala.

So on Monday, November 13, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to declare state of emergency in education and also enjoined him to pay more attention to the education sector as he has done to economy and security.

Declaring emergency in education is long overdue and to remind the constituted authorities of the rots and terrible states of our schools, here are some pictures to blow their mind to the right directions.

1. When Cattle sack pupils and teachers from school.

This is Ohovbe Primary School, Ikpoba in Edo state. Few months ago, this picture disrupted the Internet as these cattle invaded the school sacking teachers and pupils and strolled around majestically inspecting the school's infrasturecture. Weldone cows!

2.  Many are called....

Jaime Saavedra, The World Bank's Senior Director and Head of the Global Practice of Education and . former Minister of Education of Peru was in Nigeria in June and here's what he found in one of our secondary schools.

Saavedra was stunned to see how 135 students could be under one roof learning.

In Nigeria, academic success comes with so much unnecessary grit. As seen in the picture, this is the  daily plight of these school kids. Passing through the river only means there is no school in these their community and for them to enjoy 'free education' like everyone else, they have to do pass through the river.

Studying under the tree is a sight someone would argue belongs to the colonial era, but hey this is 2017 and we still have this in Nigeria. Who says we are not good at keeping memory alive?

These are Lagos State University students learning under the tree. Welcome to Lagos, a city that aspires to attain mega status.

5.  A ride to a floating school

This is a school in a riverine community in Lagos. The school structure is terribly in bad shape. In other climes where education is a priority, government would have put a better school structure in place for this community but this is Nigeria and these pupils are expected to row their boats to school and enjoy their studies.

6. For the love of education

Here's a classroom in the northern part of the country. It is a totally empty classroom with no window, no furniture, ceilings nor doors yet the love of education pushed the pupils to come to school to learn sitting on the floor.

7. Learning from the ground up.

This is another classroom in the eastern part of the country with a teacher liberating the minds of the pupils from ground up. Students seating on the floor is a common sight in Nigeria and this is the way the government prioritizes education.

8. It is a floored system

The Nigerian education system is seriously flawed and riddled with everything anti-education. If seating in a classroom without furniture was one of the yardstick for academic excellence, these pupils would not shed any sweat to defeat their counterparts anywhere in the world.

9. Some of us get tyred of studying

A lot of people dropped out of secondary school not because their parents could not afford to sponsor their education, neither is it because they are not brilliant enough to continue. Some of us simply get tired of studying and as you can see learning on tyre is a terrible way to get educated.

10. It is a terrible sit-uation.

The picture says it all. It is a girls high school and the best way for these girls to learn is to sit on the floor to listen to their teachers, copy their notes and even write examinations.  No thanks to the government that built the classrooms.

Interestingly, the government of Nigeria is ostensibly making no effort to improve the  education system. United Nations recommended that the budget of every nation on education should be 26%, but  in the 2018 budget, 7% was alloted to education and here we are talking about declaring emergency in education.
