Novak Djokovic is eager to take an "extra step" at the Western and Southern Open as he aims for the elusive Cincinnati title.

The Serbian world number one is a four-time runner-up at the ATP 1000 event, losing in the final in 2008-09 and 2011-12.

Djokovic, who has already won six ATP World Tour titles this year, is confident he can take the next step as he prepares to face Frenchman Benoit Paire in the second round.

"Well, it's the tournament I never won in my career but as you said I've reached the final four times, so it gives me enough reason to believe that I can go that extra step this year," he said.

"Hopefully, this year I can make it. I did play good tennis here in the past.

"I also didn't have, some years were not as great, especially the last two years but again, I think this year has been one of the best years of my tennis career.

"The year where I've won two grand slams and won over 50 matches so far midway through the season.

"So I'm feeling great on the court, confident, and hopefully I'll be able to use that this week."

Djokovic has claimed both the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles this year, with the US Open crown having eluded him since his only success at Flushing Meadows in 2011.
