Simona Halep: I have a lot of confidence

Confidence in the Simona Halep camp is sky-high after Sunday's fourth-round win against Yanina Wickmayer.

Simona Halep is full of confidence after reaching a second consecutive Australian Open quarter-final on Sunday.

The Romanian world number three required her maiden win over Yanina Wickmayer " 6-2 6-4 " to book a spot in the last eight at Melbourne Park.

As seeds fell by the wayside at the year's first grand slam, Halep has looked at ease sweeping past Karin Knapp, Jarmila Gajdosova, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Wickmayer without dropping a set.

And the 2014 French Open runner-up is now playing her best tennis as she prepares to face Russian 10th seed Ekaterina Makarova in the quarter-finals.

"A lot of confidence I have now because I didn't lose a set," Halep told a media conference.

"I had good matches here in first week, so I'm really happy that I'm in second week now like last year.

"Here I started to play my best tennis in grand slams. So means a lot for me.

"I really have more confidence now to play the quarter-finals."

As well as never beating Wickmayer in three previous meetings, Halep had never won a set against the Belgian.

But the 23-year-old finally broke that duck, thanks in part to her serving throughout the two sets.

Halep had a 79 per cent success rate on her first serve to go with five aces.

"I think I stayed very aggressive. I took the balls very fast. I served pretty well," she added.

"My serve helped me a lot in important moments, like in first set when I finished the set with two aces. It was very important moment."
