Ruthless Andy Murray marched into the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters with an impressive straight-sets victory over David Goffin.

The Wimbledon champion, aiming to replace Novak Djokovic at the top of the rankings, needed just an hour and 35 minutes to complete a 6-2 6-2 win over the 11th seed from Belgium.

Three-time grand-slam champion Murray had won all four meetings with Goffin prior to Friday's quarter-final and maintained his perfect record against the world number 12 with a dominant display.

The second seed, eyeing a sixth tour-level title of a fruitful year, saved all five break points he faced in an impressive service exhibition and did not allow Goffin a look-in.

Murray has now won 16 sets in a row, having come into the tournament on the back of taking the China Open title, and remains on course for a showdown with Djokovic in the final, with Jack Sock or Gilles Simon to come in the last four.

The opening set went with serve until a vibrant Murray cranked up the pressure and won four games in a row to go a set up.

Goffin saved six break points in game two of the second set, but his hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals suffered a blow when Murray took his second match point to finish off a masterful performance.
