The Seattle Mariners edged the Oakland Athletics in MLB on Wednesday, to close on a wildcard spot.

Seattle are half a game behind the Detroit Tigers in the race for a post-season spot, with the A's occupying the first wildcard place in the American League.

The Mariners came from behind to down Oakland 2-1, with solo homers to Kyle Seager and Corey Hart seeing them to victory.

Detroit, meanwhile, were humbled 7-0 by the Cleveland Indians, who were powered to victory by a complete shutout from starting pitcher Danny Salazar.

The Indians are four games behind the second wildcard spot.

In the National League wildcard race, there is only half a game between the slipping Milwaukee Brewers and the Atlanta Braves.

The Brewers retain the second wildcard spot, only just, despite their eighth consecutive defeat coming in the form of a 6-2 loss to the rookie-infested Chicago Cubs.

Atlanta are within striking distance after a 7-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, with BJ Upton's two-run homer a highlight.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are also slumping, two games outside a post-season spot after their fourth loss in a row - falling to the St Louis Cardinals 1-0.

Peter Bourjos hit a walk-off single for St Louis - the NL Central division leaders - in the ninth inning.

The San Francisco Giants occupy an NL wildcard spot, but were beaten 9-2 by the Colorado Rockies.

Outside chances of breaking into the play-offs, the Miami Marlins fell to a 4-3 loss to the New York Mets to be 5.5 games off the wildcard positions.

The New York Yankees (four games) and Toronto Blue Jays (4.5 games) are some way back in the American League race, but had respective wins over the Boston Red Sox (5-1) and the Tampa Bay Rays (7-4).

In a pulsating battle between two NL division leaders, the East-leading Washington Nationals trumped the West-topping Los Angeles Dodgers 8-5 after 14 innings.

Washington trailed by two runs heading to the ninth, only to produce a three-run inning - however the Dodgers responded with a run to tie it up.

The 12th inning saw both sides post two runs, before the Dodgers failed to keep pace after Washington struck another three runs at the top of the inning.

The AL-East leading Baltimore Orioles continued to flex their muscle, shutting out the Cincinnati Reds 6-0.

The Minnesota Twins had 19 hits as they dismantled the Chicago White Sox 11-4, the Houston Astros had a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels, the Kansas City Royals swept the Texas Rangers with a 4-1 result and the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Diego Padres 6-1.
