Marcus Stoinis endured quite the rollercoaster ride before he was told of his selection in Australia's limited-overs squad.

The 25-year-old was named as one of three potential debutants on Wednesday, part of the squad that will face England and Ireland in limited-overs matches.

But he only received the news from chief selector Rod Marsh after an unusual period.

Stoinis played for a World XI against Nepal in a charity game in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, opening the batting with Sri Lanka great Sanath Jayasuriya, making 48 and taking 1-8.

An unusual set of circumstances followed.

"I just got back from Malaysia and parked my car at the front of the hotel," Stoinis said on Wednesday. "I went in to check my bags in, came out, no car there, it was towed.

"I went and picked my car up - that was a good atmosphere there, everyone was pretty angry, there were probably 20 people in there " I left there, went and had dinner by myself and got a call from Rod Marsh, so a bit of a rollercoaster."

Stoinis made a 77 for Australia A against India A in Chennai in July, while he also picked up three wickets in two games.

The all-rounder has a 27.73 batting average in List A matches and a bowling average of 52.33.

"I wasn't waiting by my phone. I think when you're in the Australia A setup, you know you're probably close," he added. "It's still very exciting."

Stoinis is thrilled to be playing under Steve Smith, who was officially named captain of the limited-overs teams.

"I played all my underage sort of stuff against Steve and played in the Australian under-19s with him," he said.

"Even then you could tell he learns from everything he does, I think you can see that from the way he plays, very smart cricketer so it's exciting to be involved in his first proper stint as captain."
