Former Australian rugby league player Jarryd Hayne's first padded practice with the San Francisco 49ers was a success.

During Wednesday's first fully-padded practice at San Francisco's pre-season training camp, Hayne held his own against hard-hitting linebacker Nick Moody, drawing an "attaboy" from running backs coach Tom Rathman, himself a former 49ers fullback.

Hayne, who is listed as a running back by the 49ers, has concentrated on technique, especially during blocking drills, knowing he needs to keep his pad level low.

"I think every time a running back goes against a linebacker and you've got to put your body in front, that's what we're looking for," Hayne told reporters following practice.

"Tom's massive about that. Tom obviously had a great career back in the day. He loves all that contact stuff. He'd do it every day if it was legal."

After winning player of the year honours in the NRL last year, Hayne decided to take a shot at the NFL in the United States.

The 27-year-old signed a three-year contract with the 49ers in March and then impressed coach Jim Tomsula during a May minicamp.

Hayne admitted to the San Francisco Gate that getting hit by Moody "shakes you around a little bit" and conceded that he'd be sore the next day, but he also is relishing the tough "Rathman special" drills.

"I think the biggest difference is you're wearing a helmet and shoulder pads," Hayne said.

"You go a lot harder into tackles and you go with a lot more force. It does impact you differently. For me, I've just got to keep working on my game and figure out the best fix that's going to put me in the best position to pass-protect or run the ball."
