Manu Ginobili was thanked by Carmelo Anthony after he brought his Argentina career to an emotional end at Rio 2016.

San Antonio Spurs star Ginobili's time on the international scene was brought to a close with a 105-78 defeat to the United States in the quarter-finals.

Ginobili won Olympic gold with Argentina in 2004, shocking a star-studded USA team in the semi-finals.

Argentina could not repeat the feat this time around, and Ginobili received congratulations on a fine international career from Anthony and USA coach Mike Krzyzewski at the end of Wednesday's contest.

"They congratulated me. They were very kind, very respectful, and when legends of the game show their respect, it has an extra value," Ginobili said.

"They didn't have to do it. They could have just shook my hand and then go do their thing and go think about [the semi-final with] Spain, but they spared some very kind words, respectful words. I truly appreciate it."

On his international career, he added: "It has been an incredible era. It is something very important in your life that is ending, and that means a lot, so you've got to think of so many things, and well, [it] makes me feel a little emotional.

"There is nothing missing, and I feel very fortunate for being in this team for so many years, and [to] have contributed. I think we did well overall."

Revealing the details of his conversation with Ginobili, New York Knicks small forward Anthony said: "He's put in a lot of work, and he's represented them [Argentina] in a great fashion.

"He's put that country on his back over the years. I just told him 'thank you', especially for me playing against him over the past three or four Olympics. I just said 'thank you.'"
