Rafael Nadal has announced that he will miss Wimbledon due to the wrist injury that forced him to retire from the French Open.

The 14-time grand-slam champion looked in ominous form at Roland Garros, where he is a nine-time champion, easing past Sam Groth and Facundo Bagnis in straight sets to reach the third round.

Nadal was unable to go any further in the clay-court major, though, withdrawing ahead of a scheduled third-round encounter against Marcel Granollers after the pain in his left wrist became too much to bear.

The 30-year-old Spaniard pulled out of the Queen's Club Championships and has now revealed that he will not be fit enough to compete on the famous grass in South-West London when the tournament starts  this month.

Nadal posted on Facebook: "Hi everybody. I'm sad to announce that after talking to my doctors, and receiving the results of my last medical revision, I won't be able to play at Wimbledon this year.

"As you can all imagine, it's a very tough decision, but the injury I suffered at Roland Garros needs time to heal.

"Unfortunately, I won't be able to join in the pre-tournament event ‪#‎TheBoodles‬ at ‪#‎Stokepark‬ that I attended in previous years.

"Thank you all for your support, especially my fans. Your kind messages mean so much to me."

Nadal was beaten by Dustin Brown in the second round of Wimbledon last year and has failed to advance beyond the fourth round since losing to Novak Djokovic in the final five years ago.

He had returned to form this year, though, winning back-to-back titles in Monte Carlo and Barcelona on his favoured clay surface in April before injury struck.

There was no word from Nadal on when he expects to return from his latest setback.
