Michelle Carter shocked the track and field world by winning Olympic gold in the women's shot put at Rio 2016 on Friday.

With an American-record heave of 20.63 metres in her sixth and final attempt, Carter dethroned two-time defending Olympic champion and heavy favourite Valerie Adams of New Zealand.

She is the first American woman to win gold in the shot put and only the second to medal, after Earlene Brown took bronze in the 1960 Rome Games.
