ODI series Australia: James Faulkner, Shaun Marsh out of ODIs

Australia will be without Shaun Marsh (finger) and James Faulkner (calf) for their impending ODI series against South Africa.

Shaun Marsh and James Faulkner have been ruled out of Australia's one-day international series against South Africa, while Mitchell Starc was reportedly taken to hospital after an incident during a training session on Thursday.

Marsh sustained a fractured finger during the recent tour of Sri Lanka but, following further examination, has been removed from the side as a precaution.

A calf strain during a training session on Thursday is expected to sideline Faulkner for up to a month, with Usman Khawaja the only replacement called into the squad.

"Shaun undertook a follow up x-ray and was reviewed by specialists this week," said Australia physio David Beakley.

"Unfortunately due to the fracture being in the joint of the finger we have decided to take a more conservative approach, therefore he will not be available for the ODI series in South Africa.

"James suffered a low grade calf strain during a fitness session in Sydney today which we expect to take three to four weeks to recover. Unfortunately this means he will also be unavailable for the South Africa series."

Starc, who was already being rested for the tour to South Africa, is believed to have sustained a shin injury when he collided with training equipment. The paceman was reportedly taken to hospital in Sydney for further examination.

The first ODI of the five-match series will take place at Centurion on September 30.
