Former Australia international and State of Origin centre Jamal Idris could be set for a return to NRL with Wests Tigers.

Idris was released from his contract with Penrith Panthers one year early in November, taking an indefinite break to contemplate his future.

The 26-year-old, who also represented Canterbury Bulldogs and Gold Coast Titans, could be set to make his return at the Tigers for the 2017 season.

"We've had a preliminary discussion with Jamal as many other [clubs] would have as well," Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe told the Fox Market Watch podcast.

"I was fortunate enough to have Jamal at Penrith and I've seen what Jamal can do on the field. I understand the power and potential that Jamal has. He's still a young man and if talks continue, he'd be a welcome addition.

"There's always a risk versus reward in all of these things. We go through the process of making sure that if we go down that path that any player is medically fit and ready to come and join our club.

"We also look at the fit from a person perspective and in Jamal's case, I think he'd be a perfect fit for our organisation."
