Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith will return to the Eastern Conference champions for the 2015-16 NBA season.

Smith took to Instagram to reveal his future plans on Thursday, though terms of the new contract have yet to be announced.

The 29-year-old surprisingly declined his $6.4million player option to stay in Cleveland at the start of free agency after playing a role in the Cavaliers' run to the NBA Finals, but Smith will now return to the Quicken Loans Arena.

"Happy to say that I am returning to the Cavs! It's been a long ride this summer but I can say for sure, well worth the wait," Smith wrote.

"When I opted out of my contract, I wanted to understand the landscape of the NBA and where I fit best. The Cavaliers had things they needed to do in order to piece together a championship calibre roster.

"I ended up deciding that instead of potentially securing a larger deal elsewhere, I wanted to re-join an incredible organization in pursuit of the ultimate goal, an NBA championship. Thank you to the Cavaliers for making this happen. Can't wait to get started! #TheLand"

Smith joined the Cavs via a trade from the New York Knicks last season and averaged 12.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in the regular season.

He averaged figures of 12 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists against the Golden State Warriors in the Finals.
