Otago's home advantage proved crucial to getting them back on track following three defeats, one of which came in their challenge for the Ranfurly Shield.

Thomas Franklin's early try set the tone for a dominant Otago performance, which also included scores from Teihorangi Walden, Hayden Parker and Fa'asiu Fuatai.

Waikato's Damian McKenzie endured a tough day with the boot, missing all three of his penalties, scored the visitors' only try of a miserable evening.

In Sunday's other ITM Cup match, Wellington lost yet again in a 42-20 reverse at home to Tasman.

Tasman's Robbie Malneek, Alex Ainley, Pete Samu and a James Lowe double saw their side home, with Tolu Fahamokioa and Eric Sione replying for the beleaguered hosts.
