IK punched Smith following an argument about a $600 plane ticket which he bought for him
Nigerian born NFL star Ikemefuna "IK" Enemkpali has been sacked by The Jets after punching and damaging the jaw of his teammate Geno Smith.
IK punched Smith following an argument about a $600 plane ticket which the Nigerian born linebacker bought for his teammate to attend a football campat Pfugerville in July.
Smith could not attend the football camp-after a close friend of his died in a motorcycle accident- and refused to pay IK back the $600.
Smith’s damaged jaw according to ESPN will make him miss out for six to 10 weeks.
Jets head coach Todd Bowles was extremely displeased with the incident saying: "there was an altercation in the locker room."
"Had nothing to do with football. Something very childish. He got cold-cocked, sucker-punched, whatever you want to call it, in the jaw."
After the incident, IK apologized for his action through a statement.
“I apologize to the Jets organization, coaches, teammates and fans,” the statement reads.
“Geno and I let our frustration get the best of us, but I should have just walked away from the situation.
“I deeply regret and apologize for my actions. It was never my intention to harm anyone. I appreciate the opportunity I had with the Jets.”
The Nigerian born who is now a free agent has a history of violent conduct.
According to ESPN, Enemkpali was involved in a bar fight after his redshirt freshman year at Louisiana Tech in which he struck an off-duty officer.
A uniformed officer used pepper spray on Enemkpali but that didn't subdue him, and a taser was used.
He was arrested and charged with battery on a police officer and disturbing the peace, which was later changed to simple battery.
