Nigeria are the champions of the 2017 Women's AfroBasket after they beat Senegal on Sunday.
Nigeria on Sunday, August 27 defeated Senegal 65-48 to win the 2017 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title in Bamako, Mali.
Evelyn Akhator who made the tournament All Stars scored 13points, a team high and had seven rebounds for Nigeria as they dismantled Senegal to finish the 2017 Women’s AfroBasket with a perfect winning streak.
Eight matches of the tournament they won, solidifying their dominance in African Women’s basketball.
Nigeria lost the first quarter of the final 12-18 points but returned to take the lead in the second quarter with 21-10 advantage to end the first half with 33-28 points.
The game looked an easy one for the coach Sam Vincent-led side who dominated the third quarter, recording 15 points against seven points by the Senegalese.
The Senegalese made it harder in the last quarter as Nigeria got another 17 points against Senegal’s 13 points.
Captain of the D’Tigress Aisha Mohammed contributed seven rebounds while Adaora Elonu added four assists.
Astou Traore tried to spark Senegal with game-high 17points but it was not enough to beat the D’Tigress who were clearly the better side.
Traore had a good tournament nonetheless and she was named MVP of the 2017 Women’s AfroBasket.
This is Nigeria’s third win at the Women’s AfroBasket; they had won it in 2003 and 2005; coach Vincent was also the coach of the other two winning teams, he now has three Women’s AfroBasket titles.
Courtesy of progressing to the Final, both Nigeria and Senegal had already qualified for the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Spain.
Earlier in the day, Mali beat Mozambique, 75-52, in the 3rd-Place Game.
