Two-time champion Robin Haase advanced at the ATP Generali Open after Juan Monaco withdrew due to injury.

Haase, the 2011 and 2012 winner of the ATP 250 event played on clay courts in Austria, was trailing Monaco 6-2 1-1 when the Argentine fifth seed withdrew.

Despite taking the first set, a wrist injury led to a tearful Monaco calling it quits after 49 minutes on court against the Dutchman.

Spanish eighth seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas also exited in the first round, going down to Argentine Diego Schwartzman 6-3 6-4.

There was good news for local hope Dennis Novak, the wildcard edging Brit Aljaz Bedene 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 6-1.

Santiago Giraldo, Federico Delbonis and Paul-Henri Mathieu all enjoyed straight-sets wins.

Colombian Giraldo beat Rogerio Dutra Silva 7-5 6-2, Delbonis overcame Pablo Carreno Busta 7-5 6-4 and Mathieu was too good for Kenny De Schepper 6-2 6-2 in a battle between two French qualifiers.
