Boston barely left the starting line in its bid for the 2024 Olympic Games but Los Angeles is ready to pick up the baton with a $4billion bid.

The two-time summer Games host will step into a crowded bidding field, officials told the Los Angeles Times on Monday.

The move had been expected since rumblings began to grow in recent months that Boston, the United States Olympic Committee's (USOC) original choice, might drop out in the face of widespread public opposition to the bid.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said he believes a proposed $4b campaign to host the Games could actually end up turning a profit since many of the venues are already in place.

The key economic component will be local government committing to cover any cost overruns, which Massachusetts officials declined to do, ending Boston's bid last month.

California's largest city hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984, and its proliferation of professional and college sports venues an inventory that figures to grow in the coming years if the NFL gets its way is considered by many its strongest selling point.

"I think it is right for this city. I think it's who we are," Garcetti said.

"I think we benefit from it economically, socially."

Whatever package the city and USOC eventually present to the IOC before the final vote in 2017, competition will be stiff.

Paris, Rome, Hamburg, Budapest and Toronto also are possible contenders, with a September 15 deadline looming for national organizing committees to submit bid cities.

The IOC has encouraged USA to bid for the 2024 Games after the country skipped the 2020 process.
