Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has reflected on the path he followed to become a regular name with the Nigerian football national team.

The Ilorin-born striker incredibly played for all the age-grade Nigerian national teams from the U15 level to the U23 level before graduating to the senior Super Eagles squad.

Awoniyi was a part of Nigeria's squad for the 2013 U17 World Cup, 2015 African U20 Championship, 2015 U20 World Cup, 2015 All African Games, and the 2016 Olympics before getting an invite to the Super Eagles in 2021.

Currently in camp with the Super Eagles in Algeria, Awoniyi stated that it is a 'privilege' to have featured at different levels of the Nigerian national team setup.

As reported by Sporting Life, the Nottingham Forest striker noted that though it was a long journey for him to get to the Super Eagles, he is proud of himself nonetheless.

Awoniyi said: “It is always a great privilege to be here and being able to be part of the national team is a dream come true.

"Coming from the U15 up to the Super Eagles is a long Journey and it is a journey I’m really proud of.

“But, there are times you won’t be here and there are times you would be here, so every opportunity counts."

Awoniyi started up front for Nigeria on Friday in an unofficial friendly against the home-based Algerian national team but failed to score in a match that ended in a 2-2 draw.

However, the former Liverpool and Union Berlin player asserted that his only focus is to score goals whenever he is with that Super Eagles squad.

“I just have to keep on going and keep on doing my thing and when I’m here, my job is just to score goals," Awoniyi said.

“As a striker, everyone wants to score goals, I just want to be up there, helping the team and scoring goals which is why I’m here.

“I believe it is always a privilege to be called upon to play, because we have a lot of good players out there but only 22 can be here. We that are here, have to make it count."

Taiwo Awoniyi has played four (4) games for the Super Eagles, making his debut in a World Cup qualification match against Central African Republic on October 7, 2021.

Awoniyi's only goal so far for the Super Eagles came in the 3-1 thrashing of Sudan at the group stage of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
