Calvin Bassey put his recent struggles behind him as he played a pivotal role in Ajax's dominant win on Sunday night

Calvin Bassey was at his brilliant best against Excelsior

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey showed his quality again on Sunday as he led Ajax to a big win over Excelsior in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Following Wednesday's 4-2 defeat to Napoli in the UEFA Champions League, Ajax got back to winning ways with an emphatic 7-1 victory over Excelsior at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Brian Brobbey and Dusan Tadic were the stars of the night while Bassey also chipped in with an assist as Ajax returned to the top of the Eredivisie table.

Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder started with his strongest team, fielding Tadic, Brobbey, and Steven Bergwijn in attack while Bassey, Jurrien Timber, Daley Blind, and Jorge Sanchez played in defence.

Sanchez was the one to open the scoring, finding the back of the net in the 15th minute to open the floodgates. Bassey then grabbed his second assist of the season in the 26th minute when he set up Berghuis for Ajax's second of the night.

Brobbey and Tadic linked up in the 44th minute as Ajax ran riot in front of their home fans to effectively end the match as a contest in the first half.

The Dutch champions came out for the second half with as much fervour as they played the first half, needing only 14 minutes for Brobbey to find the back of the net again in the 59th minute.

Tadic and Bergwijn got in on the act in the 64th and 75th minute respectively before substitute Mohammed Kudus scored Ajax's seventh goal in the 81st minute.

For all of Ajax's goals, it would be Excelsior that would round off the scoring for the night with substitute Nikolas Agrafiotis needing just six minutes on the pitch to score a consolation goal for the visitors in the 90th minute.

The heavy defeat took Excelsior to 12th on the table while Ajax kept up their chase for another title as they returned to the summit of the Eredivisie table.

Calvin Bassey put in a good performance to calm the nerves on Sunday, despite failing to keep a clean sheet again for the seventh match running.

Other than his first-half assist, the Super Eagles defender made three (3) clearances, two (2) interceptions, and won four (4) of the five (5) duels he was involved in.

Offensively, the attack-minded defender played one (1) key pass, completed one (1) dribble successfully, played four (4) accurate long balls of the five (5) he attempted, and tallied an 88% pass accuracy against Excelsior.

Ajax will expect to continue dominating the local front when they play away at the Mandemakers Stadion against RKC Waalwijk on Saturday, October 22.
