Salisu Yusuf's return to Super Eagles: Relief for Gernot Rohr

On Thursday, The Nigerian Football Federation announced the reinstatement of Salisu Yusuf as the Super Eagles assistant coach. This decision was approved by the Executive Committee of the NFF.

Salisu Yusuf

This announcement will come as a relief to Gernot Rohr. The Franco-German worked with Salisu Yusuf and Imama Amapakabo in the Super Eagles and Salisu Yusuf was the coach of the Super Eagles B team. Together, these coaches were building a Super Eagles team that Nigerians would be proud of.

Suddenly, things changed and Salisu Yusuf was suspended. On top of that, Imama Amapakabo did not return as assistant to Rohr. The NFF appointed Joseph Yobo as assistant coach of the team but Gernot Rohr was not comfortable with the choice of Yobo as his assistant, since he was yet to get his coaching badges. Yobo had no coaching experience and Rohr was skeptical.

After the recent performance of the Super Eagles in the qualifying series, the NFF's decision to return Salisu Yusuf to his position is a bold step in the right direction. Rohr has not hidden his desire to have his trusted assistant(s) back and Salisu's return would give him relief as the former Enyimba coach understands the team and its peculiarities.

As the Super Eagles play Blue Sharks of Cape Verde and Liberia in their last group games, they need the best of support they can get and Salisu's return is a way to technically strengthen the team for the tasks ahead.

As coach of the Super Eagles B team, he will be able to suggest NPFL players to Rohr when there is need for players. Salisu is also respected for his ability to read games and effect changes and Gernot Rohr would love to have such an assistant. This is not to take anything away from Joseph Yobo who has been passionate about his job as Rohr's assistant since he was appointed. However, at this critical stage in the Super Eagles' qualification journey, more hands are needed in the technical department of the team and Yobo will be happy to learn from Salisu Yusuf.

As the Super Eagles go into their last qualifying games and the African Cup of Nations, the impact of an experienced manager as Rohr's assistant should be plainly seen, as it was before Salisu's suspension.
