Nigerians who impressed against The Central African Republic

Which players selected by Gernot Rohr thrived over the two encounters with the Wild Beasts?

Even though some may see the glass as half-empty following Nigeria’s failure to gain six points from six against The Central African Republic, others may reckon it is half-full. Following last week’s 1-0 defeat on home soil, the West African nation get one over the Wild Beast in the reverse fixture in Douala on Sunday, beating the Central African nation 2-0.

With the Super Eagles back on track in qualifying, which players delivered strong showings in both fixtures, despite the failure to accrue maximum points?

Frank Onyeka

The Brentford midfielder was filling in for the injured Wilfred Ndidi and flourished for the majority of both games, particularly on Sunday. While he’s no Ndidi, Onyeka’s tendency to get stuck in and an uncanny ability to regain possession in the middle of the park was encouraging to witness.

If he continues to grow for the Super Eagles, the three-time African champions will no longer be as reliant on the Leicester City star.

William Troost-Ekong

Despite surprisingly coming in for harsh criticism in the 1-0 loss to CAR, Troost-Ekong was one of Nigeria’s better performers in both games against the Wild Beasts.

He remains one of the reliable players on the team and Gernot Rohr’s troops will be weaker without the Watford center-back.

Victor Osimhen

Admittedly, he didn’t have his scoring boots on in Lagos, but the in-form marksman bounced back to score in the reverse fixture.

Osimhen remains the Super Eagles’ match-winner when fit and fans of the nation will hope he stays fit for next month’s games.

The Napoli man ended a mini two-game drought without scoring in Sunday’s victory and he’ll look to continue his scoring run for Napoli before next month’s hiatus.
