'Passenger' Messi will cost PSG the UEFA Champions League - Carragher

The former England international says Lionel Messi's lack of goals and pressing will cost PSG in European competition

Jamie Carragher has tagged Lionel Messi a 'passenger' for Paris Saint-Germain

Jamie Carragher has written off Paris Saint-Germain's push for a first UEFA Champions League title this season on the back of Lionel Messi's meagre contribution without the ball. The football pundit believes that Messi's lack of pressing and his recent diminished goals contribution make him only a 'passenger' during matches.

Carragher extended the same 'passenger' tag to Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo, but stated that the Portuguese's consistent goal output makes up for his deficiencies in building up play for the Red Devils.

The former Liverpool defender made these comments while speaking with CBS Sports: "I’ve said this about Ronaldo as well but at least Ronaldo is getting goals. Ronaldo is a passenger without the ball, his goals are making up for that at this minute."

Carragher ruled out PSG and Manchester United's chances of winning the Champions League this season, stating that the clubs will stand no chance of winning at the highest levels if their talismanic players are not scoring and are barely contributing to the team play.

"In the Champions League games, certainly tonight their (PSG's) goals haven’t made up for it. Unless you score, you’re carrying passengers, and at this level of football you’ll have no chance. Manchester United won’t win the Champions League," Carragher reiterated.

Ronaldo has scored 10 goals and provided two assists for United this season, helping the club to salvage crucial wins in the Champions League whilst securing their second-round participation. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has scored only four goals and one assist this season, although three of his goals have come in the Champions League.
