President Buhari to redeem 30-year-old pledge for 1985 victories squad

President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari is set to redeem a 30-year-old pledge to the Golden Eaglets who won the 1985 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

As military president of Nigeria in 1985, Buhari made some pledges to the Golden Eaglets squad that won the 1985 FIFA U-17 World Cup but could not redeem them all before he was abruptly removed from office through a coup.

The president’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu in a statement revealed that the president has directed that the pledges he made in Dodan Barracks 30 years-ago be redeemed.

“It is a pity that those promises were never fulfilled. It is unfortunate that our players, who did us proud on the world stage went unrewarded for their efforts, despite a presidential directive to the state administrators that they be honored in their home states,” Garba Shehu wrote in the statement.

“I apologize for whatever embarrassment and disillusionment in your country these raised and then dashed hopes may have caused you. My government will do all within its power to remedy the situation”, he assured.
