Arsene Wenger names Chuba Akpom, Alex Iwobi for Champions League tie against Galatasaray

Chuba Akpom and Alex Iwobi will sit on the bench on Wednesday night

Arsenal have named two of the three Nigerian youngsters in their team; Chuba Akpom and Alex Iwobi as substitutes in the team’s match-up against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.

Akpom is no new addition to the team as he has featured for the North London club on several big occasions such as the Capital Cup last year and has been with the team on Champions League travels but has never kicked a ball in the competition.

Alex Iwobi; nephew to former Super Eagles Captain, Austin Okocha will be making the team for the first time, having graduated from the youth wing of the Gunners and is the captain of Arsenal’s youth UEFA Champions League team.

Akpom scored a hat-trick last week for the Arsenal under-19 side in a friendly against Brighton FC.

Coach of Nigeria’s Under-23 team Samson Siasia has invited Alex Iwobi for the team’s selection for the forthcoming Olympic Games qualifiers while Chuba Akpom remains a prospect yet to confirm his allegiance to the country.

Semi Ajayi, the third of the pack is not named because he is not listed amongst Arsenal’s A-list players.
