He was found guilty of murder and attempted murder on Thursday, and sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday afternoon.

Ruzina Akhtar, one of Ali's children, told reporters outside court: "The last few months have been very hard for our family as we have tried to adjust to life without our father.

"It was particularly hard for us to sit in court and listen to Darren Osborne deny he had done anything wrong. We are very pleased with the guilty verdict."

She described Ali as "a peaceful and simple man" who "had no bad thoughts for anyone."

She said: "Our father, like the victims of most terrorism, was entirely innocent, which makes his death in this violent way all the more hurtful.

"We cannot imagine the trauma he felt in his last few minutes. But we choose to remember our father with happier thoughts. He will never be forgotten."

During the trial, the lead prosecutor said Osborne had been "brainwashed" into Islamophobia after watching a BBC drama about an underage sex grooming gang run by Muslim men in Rochdale, Manchester.

During his trial, Osborne also claimed that he wanted to kill Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn at a pro-Palestinian march in London.

The London Metropolitan Police on Thursday released a 15-second clip of the scene as Osborne drove into a crowd of people in Muslim dress that night.

The force also released a series of CCTV stills that showed how he planned the attack in Wales before driving to London to carry out the deadly act.

Commander Dean Haydon, the head of the Met's counterterrorism unit, said on Thursday: "If Osborne’s aim was to create divisions and hate between communities, then from what I have seen, he has failed in that respect.

"The way that the local community in Finsbury Park — of all faiths and backgrounds — came together was astounding and this reaction was the same across London and the UK."
