A second statement from the Met said: "Officers approached the man in order to speak with him. The man reached for a knife, and police discharged a Taser."

The Evening Standard's Joe Murphy said that there were shouts of "Knife, knife, knife!" before the man was brought down with a taser.

The suspect was detained outside the Parliament's Carriage Gates, the same gates through which a terrorist gained entry to the Parliamentary estate and killed a police officer in March.

Guido Fawkes reporter Ross Kempsell filmed police leading the suspect led away to a custody van.

The Carriage Gates were closed as a precautionary measure. The pavement outside Carriage Gates was initially closed and re-opened at around 11.45 a.m.
