1st Batch of Nigerians Return From South Africa (1)

The first batch of Nigerians fleeing xenophobic or ‘Afrophobic’ attacks in South Africa, have returned home. 84 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa have arrived the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 in the company of officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 640 Nigerians have indicated their desire to return from South Africa and have registered to do so. Commercial Nigerian airline, Air Peace, says it plans to operate two flights with Boeing 777 aircraft for the job of evacuating as many Nigerians as possible. Busloads of Nigerians are being conveyed to the OR Tambo Airport near Johannesburg and more are expected to follow. Nigerians have also gathered round the consulate in South Africa for departure, although invalid papers and documentation appear to be slowing down the process. President Buhari has vowed to voluntarily evacuate as many Nigerians as possible from South Africa, with diplomatic ties between South Africa and Nigeria now hanging by a single thread.
