Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is to host members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caucus in the House of Representatives to iftar (breaking of fast) on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.

The Vice President, who has declared to contest the 2023 presidential ticket of the APC, is expected to use the occasion to inform the lawmakers of his intention.

The vice president, in a letter read by the deputy speaker, Idris Wase (APC, Plateau) on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, invited both Muslim and non-muslim APC lawmakers to iftar—breaking of fast.

According to the letter, the lawmakers will be hosted at the State House Banquet Hall.

Members of the House are automatic delegates to the APC presidential primaries and play a key role in the emergence of the presidential candidate.

He has already met with members of the Progressive Governors Forum whom he hosted a similar iftar on Sunday, April 10, 2022.

The declaration by Osinbajo is setting up a possible battle with his former boss, Bola Tinubu, who had long declared his presidential ambition.

Others in the race under the APC are: Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; the Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi; and Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, former Imo governor and serving senator, Rochas Okorocha, who had earlier declared an interest.

Meanwhile, Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi; the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and the Governor of the&nbsp;Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, have continued to be linked to the race but are yet to officially make their intentions known

Youths’ organizations in Gombe have taken to the street to celebrate Vice President (VP) Yemi Osinbajo’s decision to run for the Presidency come 2023.

The youths who were made up of about 20 organizations were sighted carrying placards, dancing and celebrating with posters of Osinbajo on Monday, April 11, 2022, around Tumfure quarters in the Gombe metropolis.

Addressing newsmen during the rally, Babbangida Malabo, the National Coordinator of Progressive Youth Group (PYG) stated that the groups were celebrating the answer to their call which has been on since 2021.

He said, “We have been calling on the Vice President to contest for the president in 2023 general elections, we are grateful as he has declared his interest today, we the youths in Gombe are happy that he has answered our call”.

He added that the celebration was to kickstart a solidarity rally and call on Nigerians to support and work for the emergence of Osinbajo’s presidency come 2023.

He said, “In all the aspirants that have shown interest in all the political parties the VP stands out and he is one that has been working in the field for the past 7-years, considering his track records and achievements we are passionate and optimistic that if given the opportunity he will do better,” Malabo said.

Speaking on behalf of Osinbajo Youth Organization, Edison Christopher stated that the VP has proven himself to be the man Nigeria needs. “We have seen him in action whenever he is given the mandate to act as president and we all know what he did and is still doing,” he said.

“Osinbajo is the man for the job because he is intelligent, he is smart, proactive and prudent in handling things,” Christopher told newsmen.

Mr Osinbajo, who <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/news/politics/osinbajo-declares-for-president-3-months-after-tinubus-declaration/es4m8yh">made his intention to run for president known this morning</a>, had explained that he has in the process of serving alongside President Muhammadu Buhari, who he describes as a true Nigerian patriot, in the last seven years garnered enough experience and assured that if given the opportunity to fly the flag of All Progressive Congress (APC), <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/news/politics/2023-osinbajo-promises-to-complete-what-buhari-started/bwvr4dt">he will complete what the Buhari’s administration has started in the country</a>.

There have been several reports this week where Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was said to have called for the devaluation of the Naira, as the country's currency continues to sink in value.

However, in a statement signed by his spokesperson Laolu Akande, the vice president said the reports were a mis-characterisation.

"Our attention has been drawn to statements and reports in the media mis-characterising as a call for devaluation, the view of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo that the Naira exchange rate was being kept artificially low.&nbsp;

"Prof. Osinbajo is not calling for the devaluation of the Naira. He has at all times argued against a willy-nilly devaluation of the Naira.&nbsp;

"For context, the vice president’s point was that currently, the Naira exchange rate benefits only those who are able to obtain the dollar at N410, some of who simply turn round and sell to the parallel market at N570.

"It is stopping this huge arbitrage of over N160 per dollar that the vice president was talking about. Such a massive difference discourages doing proper business, when selling the dollar can bring in 40% profit!&nbsp;

"This was why the vice president called for measures that would increase the supply of foreign exchange in the market rather than simply managing demand,&nbsp;which opens up irresistible opportunities for arbitrage and corruption."&nbsp;&nbsp;

The statement adds that the real issue confronting the Nigerian economy is how to improve the supply of foreign exchange. "But this will not happen if we do not allow mechanisms like the Importers and Exporters window to work.&nbsp;

"If we allow this market mechanism to work as intended, we will find that the Naira will appreciate against the dollar as we restore confidence in the system," he added.

The diminishing value of the Naira has led to spiralling inflation in the market.

According to the vice president, the real issue confronting the Nigerian economy is how to improve the supply of foreign exchange.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has charged the banking and finance sector to take advantage of new opportunities and adapt to domestic and international developments.

Financial technology and payment firms have become a burgeoning part of Nigeria's money ecosystem.

However, the regulator <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/business/cbn-freezes-rise-vest-bamboo-accounts-over-illegal-trading/cev4cv3">Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)</a> and the Nigerian government at large, have been at a loss on how to deal with some of these firms driven by young people.

Speaking at the opening session of the 14th Annual Banking and Finance Conference themed: “Economic Recovery, Inclusion, and Transformation, the role of Banking and Finance," in Abuja on Tuesday, September 14, the vice president said:&nbsp;

“It is time for the sector to take on some of the transformative big-ticket items that would fundamentally transform our economy. Such matters include consumer finance but housing finance in particular.”

The vice president added that: “Going forward, the banking and finance sector must take advantage of the new opportunities that are opening up and also adapt to domestic and international developments.

“The rapid changes in the technology sector mean that financial technology companies and payment service companies are now an inescapable part of the banking and financial landscape.”

The vice president also said that financial inclusion is critical to the federal government's economic recovery programme.

Osinbajo: 'CBN must recognise that Fintechs, payment platforms are here to stay'

It is in God's nature to create new beginnings and Nigeria is on course for one of those, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says.

The vice president stated this while featuring virtually at the ongoing 25th Annual Convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG)--The Americas, themed: New Beginning.

Osinbajo, who is also a pastor in RCCG, cited the biblical story of Nathaniel who doubted whether any good thing could come out of Nazareth.

The vice president declared with optimism that despite doubts on whether anything good could come out of Nigeria, the country will experience a new beginning.

"Today, many men are saying the same about our nation Nigeria, even men of God. But this is the textbook case of how God works. He is set to give Nigeria a new beginning," Osinbajo preached.

He added that: “In the midst of current travails, the God of new beginnings is about to change our story. He is about to do something new. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.”

The vice president also stated that all Nigerians need God.

Others who spoke at the convention were the General Overseer of the Church, Pastor E.A. Adeboye, his wife, Pastor Folu Adeboye, the Continental Overseer of the Church in the American Continent, Pastor James Fadel and other guest speakers drawn from around the world.

The convention of the RCCG in the US is reportedly the largest gathering of Nigerians anywhere in the US, Canada, and&nbsp;Southern and Central American countries.

Osinbajo: 'God is about to give Nigeria a new beginning'

The Osinbajo Grassroots Organisation (OGO) has commenced a campaign for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to contest for the nation's presidency in 2023.

On Sunday, August 8, 2021, the group described Osinbajo as “a neutraliser and stabiliser" who has proven to be the backbone of the Muhammadu Buhari presidency.

The case for an Osinbajo presidency was made during the second edition of Osinbajo Day which held in Abuja with the theme: “Run, Osinbajo run: The future beckons."

Among the campaigners were the Director-General, Advocacy for Good Governance, Hussain Coomassie and retired journalist Akin Makanjuola.

Some of the placards on display at the event had the inscriptions: ‘In Osinbajo, we see a loyal leader’, ‘2023: Let Osinbajo lead’, ‘Nigerians love Osinbajo’, ‘Great Nigeria, Great Nation, Great Osinbajo’, ‘Thank you, Buhari for giving us Osinbajo’ and ‘Osinbajo: The future beckons,’ among others.

OGO Convener Funsho Ojo, delivered a speech titled: “Unhappy is the Land that has no heroes."

Ojo would go on to say that: “What is this project? The project is the celebration of a man we have adopted as our role model, a man we are all proud of, a man in whose hand, as young men and women, we can entrust our future.

"It is for this reason and many more that we have chosen, at personal sacrifice, to build a movement around him.

“We are appealing to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo to throw his hat into the ring and take up higher responsibility, having worked diligently with the President and with great results to show."

64-year-old Osinbajo is eligible to run for the presidency in 2023, with President Buhari's constitutionally permissible two terms of eight years in office elapsing in exactly 21 months and 2 weeks from now.

Osinbajo served as Governor Bola Tinubu's Attorney General and Justice Commissioner in Lagos from 1999 to 2007.

Before his foray into politics, Osinbajo, a law Professor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), taught Law at the University of Lagos and was Head of Department of Public Law at the institution.

Tinubu submitted Osinbajo's name as Buhari's running mate ahead of the 2015 presidential contest.

The governing All Progressives Congress (APC) is likely to zone its presidency ticket to the south--a region from where Osinbajo hails--ahead of the crucial 2023 vote.

Osinbajo's name has been popping up wherever and whenever discussions on Buhari's successor are being had.

In February, Osinbajo's spokesperson Laolu Akande<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/how-osinbajo-spends-his-day-pulse-interview/6l87325"> told Pulse during an exclusive chat </a>that his principal is primarily concerned with helping Buhari deliver on his electoral promises.

"Let’s not waste time discussing what will happen in 2023 when we have serious challenges in 2021. Let’s talk about that in 2023 please.

"I don’t think Osinbajo succeeding Buhari is the issue on the table right now. I think the vice president has a responsibility to support the president to deliver on his mandate," Akande said.

Osinbajo's mentor and protégé, Bola Tinubu, has been nicely setting out his stall for<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/news/politics/the-politics-behind-tinubus-latest-london-pictures-pulse-editors-opinion/t2hqmer"> a presidential run. </a>

The vice president has been tight-lipped on future political plans.

A group is urging Osinbajo to run for President in 2023

The federal government is looking for the right type of investors in its privatisation and commercialization drive, says Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

"We are looking out for the right models, the right type of investors and also looking at funding for these investors over an extended period of time,” the vice president said at a one-day investors’ webinar organised by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) in collaboration with the Nigerian Exchange Group and Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), on Tuesday, July 13, 2021.

Osinbajo also restated the federal government's commitment towards infrastructural and national economic development, and urged local investors and the international investment community to take advantage of the many opportunities offered by the Nigerian economy.

The vice president also underscored the importance of the Public-Private Partnership model in promoting infrastructure development and driving economic growth.

Osinbajo also highlights tax waivers that have been given to companies who help government fund infrastructure projects.

Osinbajo: 'We are looking for investors to support'

<h1>According to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, thanks to the federal government’s COVID-19 stimulus package, the Nigerian economy did not degenerate as feared and at least over 2 million jobs have both been created and saved with the implementation of the Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP).&nbsp;</h1>

The Osinbajo-led Economic Sustainability Committee (ESC) also reiterates that although the target of N2.3 trillion estimated to be spent under the ESP has not yet been achieved, the federal government's appropriation of part of that total--which is N500 billion--was completely released by the end of May.

The committee also says that a total of 2,100,021 jobs have been saved and created.

"The breakdown of the figures indicate that 1.3 million jobs have been retained through interventions in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) space, including the payroll support.&nbsp;

"The 774,000 jobs from the Public Works Programme and 26,021 jobs from construction /rehabilitation projects across the country were among those freshly created," a statement from Laolu Akande, Osinbajo's spokesperson, reads.

According to Osinbajo, “our budget funds were released in total. I thank the Honorable Minister of Finance for ensuring that it was done promptly, which means, in effect, that as far as the budget goes, we have been able to do what we practically promised to do.

“I know that if we were able to infuse N2.3 trillion into the Nigerian economy, we will not have the employment figures that we have today, we will not have the problems that we have today, they will be significantly reduced.

"Even with what we are able to do with the budget, growth figures at least indicate that things have not degenerated as badly as many had thought.

“So, you can imagine what we could have done if we were able to fully implement what we thought we would be able to implement. Unfortunately, this hasn’t been the case.

"We hope that in the next couple of weeks, we will be able to get some good response on more funds that we expect to get from the CBN which will help us to make some progress on the implementation.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Osinbajo stated this on Monday, April 27, 2021, when he received His Royal Majesty, Yakanaje Uke, Alhaji Dr. Ahmed Abdullahi Hassan, who was at the presidential villa on a courtesy visit.

According to the vice president, “there is no question at all that we are facing security challenges, but we will overcome them. The role of the leadership is to sit down to think through the problems.

“This is a big country, so policing is very difficult. There is a need for us to re-organise our security architecture, which is what is going on now.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

He added that: “I believe strongly that the reason why we are experiencing what we are going through today is because we are being prepared for the future.

“A future where we will take into account all of the problems because if we haven’t gone through the problems we are going through now, it will be difficult for us to appreciate the importance of fairness and justice, the importance of giving people a voice and a representation."
