<h1>He might be more famous for his smash hit records, but CDQ is one of Nigeria's elite rappers. His brand, his music and his voice are strongly aligned in their shared spirit for Nigeria's inner-city fabric. But unknown to many, as he rapped on the introspective and gratitude-filled, 'Could Have Been Worse,' he's B.sc holder who drives a great car.</h1>

Equally unknown to many; that car is a Chevrolet Camarro. In the heydays of his career, he "feels blessed." He understands the odds he's beaten to get to this level and he doesn't look at what he doesn't have. Word on the street says CDQ could have worked in a bank, but the allure of the music was too great to refuse.

Now, he's here with the heart of a lion and an EP titled after the infamous MI Abaga diss record, 'The Viper.' On it Abaga diss Vector with, "You're not even top five from Yoruba land, Mode, Eldee, Baddo, Dagrin... omo, see the queue [CDQ]..." as a reference to CDQ. Now, CDQ's fifth body of work in a rich discography is titled, See The Queue.

Make no mistake, 'Could Have Been Worse' is laced with some bars. 'Total' is more an Afro-pop record which features the hook prowess of the veteran, Timaya. "Ice on my neck like say I dey sell gold..." is an understandable line, but it's a weak bar. Gold isn't diamond in the grand scheme.

However, "Iroko t'o gba'bode ko le r'ewe b'ora..." is an elite bar. In English that means, "The abominable iroko will never have leaves..." That's on some Pete Edochie nuggets... The record continues the vote of gratitude that CDQ started on 'Could Have Been Worse.'

Both Timaya and CDQ might catch some smoke for their praise of Mompha and especially, Hushpuppi but a lot will depend on when this record was made. From there, CDQ went into South Africa for Amapiano and Gqom sounds. 'Moyan' is a shortened version of 'Won fe moyan...'

In Pidgin that means, 'Dem wan know person...' This looks like the most hit-worthy record on this EP. However, it's greatest impediment might be with Jaypizzle's mistake of not increasing the volume on that bass - it would have taken this record from a '6' to an instant 8/10.

A lot of that problem seems down to Nigerian producers and their singular idea of what Amapiano should be. They feel it should be more about the percussion than the melody, but no genre deserves dogmatic recreation. Amapiano is at its best when it accomodates melodies. Nonetheless, 'Moyan' has a lot of potential.

The Electro-House record, 'Lai Lai' is topically sound. CDQ discussed his love for a beautiful Christian woman with a 210 IQ. It seems an ode to a Christian lady that he, the Muslim kid fell in love with. But musically, the record is a weak poor man's version of 'Skeleton Move' by Master KG.

'Omo Olomo' brings back the Hip-Hop as CDQ went into his Trap bag to celebrate his 'Ibile' background. What a record...

CDQ's projects might never get the appreciation they deserve because his brand has one fault; when people think of CDQ, they don't think 'albums.' For that reason, his album will sail under radars, even when they deserve great love. It's something that he has to fix.

Secondly, the entire project is filled with gratitude and personal topics that relate to CDQ's journey and where he currently stands. He also feels comfortable and proud of what he's been able to achieve. However, that entire spirit seems at loggerhead with the EP's title. At best, it's shrouded in cluster.

Finally, some of these songs are just too long. Tracks two, three and four should not have been more than three minutes each.

Nonetheless, this project has a measure of replay value.

<h1>For 14 years, Nigerian superstar and veteran, Timaya has been in our faces, producing hit after hit and nailing his impact into the consciousness of American Grammy winner, Cardi B. He has told his ‘True Story’ as a ‘Plantain Boy’ with immense faith in God.&nbsp;</h1>

He has spoken about ‘Life Anagaga’ and showed ‘<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/stream-timaya-gratitude-new-album/7l56fkm">Gratitude</a>’ for his journey and, he has told us, ‘Malonogedi’ while inspiring us to shake our ‘Bum Bum.’ He has also rebranded from ‘Dem Mama’ to DM and become ‘Papichulo’ or ‘Chulo’ for short.&nbsp;

All the while, his ploy has been to make feel-good Afro-pop music the best way he can. His story and style of music is also one of the least criticized because Timaya is never going to change and there is no reason to expect him to change. But here, there is a slight change.&nbsp;

His latest album, Gratitude comes on the heels of welcoming his third child with the stunning Dunnie. On ‘L.O.V.E,’ it seems Timaya makes music for Dunnie aboard a Reggae beat.&nbsp;

‘Gratitude’ is a Timaya album filled with feel-good Afro-pop music, but this time his topics are from a more mature, calmer, introspective and inspired Timaya. The music is enjoyable and calmer.&nbsp;

In that spirit, Timaya sings, “Me I nor dey do gra gra…”&nbsp;

Commendably, he also bravely goes through 15 tracks by himself. While the album has some ‘vibes,’ Timaya stands tall and speaks resonant truths into the entire spirit of his album. He is still energetic, but his experience and veteran status shows in his music and he openly projects that.&nbsp;

On ‘Don Dada’ he sings, “I be their role model and their big boss…” Seconds before lauding himself, he also spoke about calling some people who don’t pick up.&nbsp;

While he used to sing about partying hard and living fast he now sings, “All the money in the world I want to hold it, I don’t want to go to the club and blow it…”

His topics on ‘Iberibe,’ ‘No Limit,’ and ‘Local N Bougie’ still get very pop-esque and largely bland, but his topics across the album are more attuned to lessons from and of life. But guys, ‘Local N Bougie’ is a good record - whoop! How does Timaya pick these Afro-pop beats?&nbsp;

Timaya also speaks his truth too - both the savoury and the unsavoury. For a project titled with such a lofty title, Timaya articulates the right stories and shows the reason for his ‘Gratitude.’&nbsp;

This is a story of resilience, providence, pain and success from a veteran Nigerian superstar.&nbsp;

‘Don Dada’ stands tall as the pinnacle of this album, it represents every great thing/topic Timaya tries to project - good, great, bad and ugly. He might have called himself ‘Don Dada,’ but he gets to this point despite the issue, not because of the issues. What a record!&nbsp;

He sings, “Na the people wey you show love to go f*ck you up eh… I pick them from the bus-stop, now if I call them, dem nor dey pick up… Slowed down, but I won’t stop, my level can never drop…”&nbsp;

It is so dense and it sees Timaya at his most honest so far. He doesn’t just want you to dance, he wants to teach his listeners some key life lessons about success.&nbsp;

On ‘Something Must Kill A Man,’ he sings, “Pay your rent before you ball. Look for work, don’t kneel down… Build your house before you die...”

While the album is largely Afro-pop, that pop sometimes borrows from a wider range of genres. In the spirit of ‘I Can’t Kill Myself,’ his highly Nigerian record which is a Cardi B favourite, Timaya is back with ‘Something Music Kill A Man.’&nbsp;

They are both songs which speak unavoidable life nuggets with a resigned tone. But while ‘I Can’t Kill Myself’ speaks more to the need to slow down when needed, ‘Something Must Kill A Man’ speaks more to the inevitability of death.&nbsp;

But despite that resignation to an inevitability, Timaya’s matured mind struck again. On the melodious Afrobeat record, he sings, “Something must kill a man, but e nor mean say man nor go plan. E nor say you must fall your hand…”&nbsp;

In that spirit, Timaya sings about his need to be left alone without worries on ‘Chulo Bothers Nobody.’ To him, if he bothers nobody, then he wants nothing to bother him.&nbsp;

Interestingly, he has been like this since <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/timayas-chulo-vibes-ep-gets-release-date-see-tracklist/x1b3x35">Chulo Vibes</a>. On ‘<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/watch-timaya-releases-visuals-to-2-stoopid/99442kf">Stoopid,</a>’ he sings, “Me I nor get time for nobody…”&nbsp;

On the negative side, we got that narrative in different formats one too many times. Chulo doesn’t care, yes we get it - we heard too much of that.&nbsp;

Nonetheless, the fact that Timaya doesn’t get the credit he deserves from Nigerians seems like a sticking point. After Pulse Nigeria named him on a decade list in 2019, Timaya made a video where he told Pulse off.&nbsp;

On ‘Something Must Kill A Man,’ he sings, “I don’t give a f*ck about their credit o, I want to work hard for it…” That‘s defiance and ambition in one.

He also tries to hide how hard it is to come to terms with his veteran days, but it shows.&nbsp;

At the root of everything, Timaya is a man of faith. His belief in God shows throughout this album and he proudly attributes his journey and success to God. This is reflected on the Willis-produced Ogene praise song, ‘Okaka.’ It should have been the final track on this album.&nbsp;

On the mellow Chillz-produced ‘The Mood,’ he once again thanks God after he sings, “If you vex me, I go leave you unto God…” This song could have done with a Fireboy feature though.&nbsp;

A lot of the songs on this album should have been 30 seconds shorter though. Even though Timaya has released bigger albums, this is his most introspective project. It adequately reflects Timaya’s current stance in life and largely reveals a different side to him.&nbsp;

The album should have also been three or tracks shorter. Timaya also thanks God on ‘Ebiola Papa,’ but this album would have been fine without it, ‘The Light’ and ‘Buru.’&nbsp;

Although very private, Timaya is known to have three kids from two women. His ex-girlfriend Barbara Nwokolo and Tamar, an interior decorator.

''I am the unconventional person,'' he said to me. ''I have come to upset the flow, I have come to go on tour when DJ's are not expected to go on tour, I have come to drop albums when DJ's in this side of the world rarely do... Doing things the regular way never works.''

How would you describe the year 2018?

''It was epic. 2018 is a year I will not forget anytime soon. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with as many talented people. The year kinda like taught me a lot of new things. It was an amazing year business-wise, career-wise.''

What are some of those things that the year taught you?

''Self-confidence. The year also taught me that sometimes you could do so well and people still don't give you your credit for doing amazingly well. The number of successes I recorded last year was downplayed by the media and a lot of people.

And if you do so well and it gets downplayed, it could affect your psychology, so self-confidence is what helps you pull through that, whether they recognize it or not. It is just very important that you are aware of who you are and your worth.''

How was it like when you did not win the Best DJ Award at the SoundCity MVP Awards?

At the third edition of the <a id="2e5949c7-c49b-43d0-8c79-394d4a0abb3f" href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/music/see-full-winners-list-at-soundcity-mvp-awards-2019/w0m1mq8">Soundcity MVP Awards</a>, which took place on January 5, 2019, a minor controversy occurred during the announcement of certain categories, particularly that of the ''Best African DJ'' and ''Producer of the year'', with the crowd favorites in each category failing to emerge as winners on the night.

Spinall who lost out to DJ Neptune in the DJ category explains how he felt following the announcement.

''It was a lot of emotions in one. I think that is just what awards is. Sometimes, I don't understand why and a lot of my fans don't understand why as well, I saw a lot of angry tweets.

We are not the ones that run the awards so they probably have other reasons but they never put out the reasons why. No doubt, I felt cheated, I felt like I deserved the awards, that it didn't come doesn't mean that life stops, it just shows that we have to keep going.

The other part that hurt me about the awards was the fact that Killertunes didn't win his category. This just makes me feel like, it's glaring, so obvious.''

When the award did not go to Killertunes, what was the first thing you said to him?

Killertunes, a producer signed to DJ Spinall's The Cap Music enjoyed a dizzying rise in 2018 with his high profile works for the likes of Wizkid, Olamide, Kizz Daniel, contributing some of the biggest records for the year and Spinall recollects what he told him on the night after losing out to Phantom, producer of Burna Boy's 'Ye.'

''I remember the first thing I told him before we left the house, I said guys, remember one thing, awards do not define who you are. Win or lose, you are already established.

Like in the shortest possible time, The Cap Music has been able to produce some of the biggest songs the industry has ever heard especially in the space of 2017 to 2018. Killertunes has produced some of the biggest records.

I remember taking him to Wizkid, telling him that this is going to be the producer of the future, listen to him, I remember going there like four times a day telling him to listen to his beats.

Wiz has a different kind of ears for music and that is why I went to him first because I know he understands music and he understands sound. We worked with Kizz Daniel, Olamide, Tekno, basically everybody.

The records were there. We produced 'Manya,' we produced 'Fake Love,' 'Motigbana,' everything and these were like the biggest songs of the year and I still don't understand and that really hurt me in a way because I felt like they know and yet some powers that be just felt, we not giving him, he is not our guy.

How did you meet Killertunes?

''I met Killertunes when I was working on my first album at Timaya's studios. We were working on a record called 'Excuse Me', it wasn't like the biggest song on the album, but I just felt like he could do more from what I heard him do.

We did not intend to sign Killertunes to The Cap music initially, as a matter of fact, there were a lot of other people that we put on the waiting list even while working with him. Then it hit me one time like how are you going to help him, so one of the other guys on the list traveled out of the country, so I called Killa.''

You have had a career as a DJ for over a decade, at what point did it become important for you to transit into becoming an artist?

''I think it comes back to how I started. I read Engineering in school and always had a passion for music.

I didn't know how to go about my passion, so I felt I could start from one stage of understanding how the industry works, knowing I could make amazing playlists, so I learnt how to Deejay for three years.

I worked at Ray Power, I worked at Eko FM, Beat FM Ibadan and Lagos, then I did Industry Nite, which gave me a bigger platform to show my craft in the industry, I did that for five and a half years.

In an industry littered with a legion of disc jockeys, DJ Spinall is one of the few names that have ascended the ranks of DJ royalty working with some of the biggest names on the scene.
