Ramsey Nouah has unveiled a first-look teaser for the Play Network Studios and Ramsey Films' biopic of 90s robbery kingpin Shina Rambo.

The new teaser features Rambo turned evangelist, details making a pact with the devil and one of his deadliest robberies on the third mainland bridge.

"I am Pastor Oluwanifise Matthew Akoko formerly known as Shina Rambo. I made a covenant with the devil," the former kingpin shared in the teaser.

Play Network boss, Charles Okpaleke first announced the biopic in 2021 via an Instagram post confirming the acquisition of the intellectual property rights following a long conversation with the former bandit.

"I sat down for 3 hours and listened to a former bandit and armed robbery kingpin who terrorized Southwest Nigeria in the 90s. Though he's now a pastor preaching the gospel, his story was intriguing. I decided to acquire the Intellectual property rights to his story and make it an action packed feature film. His name is Shina Rambo," Okpaleke wrote.

While production details are yet to be confirmed, the teaser confirms that Nouah will direct with Chris Odeh to be the producer.

<h1>Several film productions have come out of Nollywood but 1992 classic, 'Living in Bondage' stands out as a connecting dot to what eventually became one of the pride of the African film industry.</h1>

The emergence of what is now called Nollywood - one of the biggest and acknowledged film industries around the world - cannot be discussed without the mention of the 1992 hit flick,<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/movies/living-in-bondage-breaking-free-is-a-perfect-sequel-after-27-years-review/km8fv24"> 'Living in Bondage'</a>.

The Nigerian film industry can be dated back to 1926 with Geoffrey Barkas' feature, 'Palaver,' which is the first feature film with Nigerian actors in a speaking role. The likes of Ola Balogun also made flicks in the 1970s that conveyed the stories of Nigeria of that time.

Subsequently, filmmakers strived to produce films for cinemas and celluloid all through the 90s when a landmark achievement was made with the berth of a united front which would be widely referred to as Nollywood.&nbsp;

But before the defining era-late 90s and early 2000s- of Nollywood, it was the novelty of the ideas, the execution of the film and subsequent success of Chris Obi Rapu directed ‘Living in Bondage’ that laid the path that the Nigerian cinematic output would follow to massive outbreak.&nbsp;

Okechukwu Okey Ogunjiofor, a creative had developed a wonderful story fit for production but was without funding, so he partnered with Kenneth Nnebue, a businessman, who imported VHS tapes from Taiwan. Making films with VHS camcorders was an inferior format to that which was obtainable in Hollywood but it was an alternative method that would change the course of filmmaking in Nigeria.&nbsp;

With Rupu as director, ‘Living in Bondage’ tells the story of a man who joins a cult in a desperate search for money and power. For ritual sacrifice, the cult leads him to murder his wife whose ghost haunts him throughout his short-lived riches. It’s a fright flick that uses supernatural plots in a way that Nigerians are familiar with.

Although the dialogue is predominantly in Igbo, ‘Living in Bondage’ was an instant cross-cultural success, the first of it’s kind to be in Nigeria.&nbsp;

"When we did 'Living in Bondage', it was a story told in a professional way despite the obvious fact that the quality of the production might be low but it was well accepted because of the language and it went on to become a cross-cultural movie so much that people who couldn't understand or speak the language understood the story because pictures tell stories,” Ogunjiofor told NollywoodDK.&nbsp;

“It was a massive revolution in filmmaking and became phenomenal and a turning point for the Nigerian movie industry.”

The direct-to-video release of the film was key in its success and it soon became the channel of distribution that turned the Nigerian film industry into a wide-reaching output.&nbsp;

“It came out so resoundingly well that it sustained the temple of the industry for 27 years,” Kenneth Okonkwo who played the lead role as Andy Okeke told Pulse.&nbsp;

As many others adopted the straight to VHS tapes format, Nnebue continued to enjoy dominance with his production outfit, NEK Links.

Nollywood has seen steady growth over the years with several other changes including the format of release. In recent years, some of the biggest flicks out of Nollywood have been released first on cinema, including ‘Living in Bondage: Breaking Free’ the sequel to the 1992 classic.&nbsp;

In August 2015, Charles Okpaleke acquired the rights to ‘Living in Bondage’ for 10 years under his production company PlayNetwork. He began the journey to what will become one of the biggest sequels in the Nigerian film industry.

The filmmaker announced on Friday March 25, via Instagram that the new biopic will take on an authentic perspective of the famed king who founded the Opobo kingdom.

"Myself and&nbsp;@ramseynouah&nbsp;are proud to announce that we have acquired the rights to tell the famed story of King Jaja from an authentic perspective,&nbsp;having the privilege of sitting with King Dandeson Douglas, Jeki V (5th on the throne) during the sesquicentennial celebration of Opobo Kingdom. We can say we have the authentic account of the eventful life of King Jaja and we are set to tell it in a gripping way as you all have come to expect from us", Okpaleke wrote.

Okpaleke's latest announcement comes months after confirming the acquisition of rights to produce a biopic based on infamous kingpin Shina Rambo. The Play Network boss revealed that he <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/entertainment/movies/charles-okpaleke-secures-rights-to-produce-feature-film-based-on-90s-robbery-kingpin/0m4mjvb">held a meeting with Rambo who is currently an evangelist, before securing the rights. </a>

There are several accounts of the 19th century king's life and death but one thing all the accounts agree is that he was among the first monarchs to resist British colonialism and died trying.

Sold into slavery at age 12, Jubo Jubogha rose in ranks as a politician and merchant prince heading the Anna Pepple House, a merchant faction of Bonny Island.

A major dispute later led Jaja to establishing a settlement which he named Opobo in 1869. As king, Opobo dominated the palm oil trade business and traded without British interference.

Events took a nosedive when the British moved to claim Opobo after European powers declared it a British territory. King Jaja refused to concede power or cease taxing British traders.

In 1887, Henry Hamilton Johnson, a British vice-consul invited Jaja to a smokescreen negotiation. King Jaja was later tried in Ghana and sent off on exile first to London then later to the West Indies.

<h1>Remakes are a risky venture because they must bank on audience nostalgia. There is no guarantee that a new idea will reignite the same emotions as the original, and for a second, I assumed Nouah had broken this jinx for the culture.</h1>

No doubt, it's has been a tough year for the film industry. But, when that feeling of self-pity wears off, all that is left is the rude awakening that 'Rattlesnake: The Ahanna story' did everything but rattle.

Despite the technical restraints of a 1995 film,&nbsp;Amaka Igwe&nbsp;successfully created a picture with profound themes and spectacular character arcs that still manage to wow its audience.&nbsp;

Unfortunately, Nouah's remake barely levels up to that gargantuan pedestal. It is a classy film but pales in comparison to the original in&nbsp;terms of the depth of the original's plot and themes.&nbsp;

Pretty much like the original&nbsp;Ahanna (Stan Nze)&nbsp;is left to fend for himself after the death of his father. When he discovers his Uncle and mother have begun a life together, he reunites with&nbsp;Nzenuozo (Bucci Franklin)&nbsp;and&nbsp;Amara (Osas Ighodaro)&nbsp;and, they birth the&nbsp;Armadas, an armed robbery gang with conflicting interests.&nbsp;

Somewhere in the mix, it begins to dawn on you that this is not just about a tragic hero but a heist film with a sloppy Robin Hood spin.

Ahanna, the eponymous character is portrayed as the brains of the gang. But asides urging his crew to be gracious and nonviolent thieves, the genius narrative is barely consistent. Then there is Nzenuozo, the ticking time bomb crackhead,&nbsp;Sango (Emeka Nwagbaraocha )&nbsp;the computer whizz,&nbsp;Bala (Efa Iwara)&nbsp;and&nbsp;Egbe (Odera Adimorah), the weapon master. Ighodaro is pretty much the thirst trap and, at least one is necessary for every heist story.

Unfortunately, a good heist movie requires more than outlined characters. Top on the list is a substantial plot, one that this story struggles to establish. Who are the Armadas? Robin Hood or good old simple thieves?

Going by the glitz and glamour portrayed in 'Living In Bondage: Breaking Free', it will not be farfetched to conclude that Play Network's productions are known for their overzealous show of glitz and glamour. In 'Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story', this becomes the most consistent feature, which is a win and a loss depending on perspective.

The show of opulence is classy when it does not feel like a huge lump shoved down one's throat and this, sadly, happens frequently.

Igwe's 'Rattlesnake', on the other hand, explores culture as a dominant theme, one of the reasons it still stays relevant. A classic example is how she delicately crafts the burial scene. The precision from the lying in state to the widow shielded with palm fronds immediately grabs your attention.&nbsp;

In Nouah's remake, there are several opportunities to create endearing moments. Sadly it is filled with pomp, pageantry and ad placements.&nbsp;

But this remake is not entirely littered with flubs. It holds good cinematography and some strong performances that set it apart. Bucci Franklin for one is a class-act as Nzenuozo. His character, though scantily developed, is easily the most memorable. He brings the adrenaline rush that the story desperately needs.

Stan Nze as Ahanna is also not a bad one to note. Nze is an actor with depth and with every chance that the story offers, he effortlessly manoeuvres his character.

Ultimately, Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story' set out on an elegant journey in a bubble that burst too soon.

The first-time director took to his verified Instagram account on Wednesday to address the accusation, stating that he had been notified and that the issue bordered on miscommunication.

Kate Henshaw had addressed the allegations on Twitter saying the artist, Louisa Ejenavbo, reached out to a fake Twitter account hence the delayed response. She also disclosed that she had reached out to her colleague who claimed the intermediary between the artist and the production team passed her work off as his.

With a very relatable story, top-notch acting, and overall beautifully coordinated scenes, the director’s first feature movie is one that entertained and impressed us this year.

‘Living in Bondage: Breaking Free’ made a staggering N25million in the first weekend in cinemas.

The film has also remained viewers favourite staying on the number one spot for the first three weeks straight after it made its way into the cinemas. It dropped to spot 2 behind 21 Bridges in its 4th week and picked up back to spot 1 in the 5th week.

According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria, ‘Living in Bondage: Breaking Free’ has made over N94 million in the box office in the last five weeks.

The film exhibitors association also showed that the film broke displaced top films like ‘Terminator: Dark Fate,’ ‘Charlies Angel,’ ‘Frozen 2,’ ‘Commando 3,’ and ‘Maleficent: Mistress of evil’ in Nigerian cinemas.
