<h2>The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to remove all shanties in Abuja to enhance security in the capital. </h2>

Speaking on Sunday, November 10, to residents of a shanty settlement in Wuye, Wike emphasised that clearing these areas is essential to safeguard lives and property.

“We have identified areas that pose security threats, like this place that has a rail line passing through. If we allow people to remain here, it’s a risk to our trains and public safety,” Wike stated.

He added that a responsible government would not ignore such potential dangers. “No government worth its salt will fold its hands and allow this place to be occupied by hoodlums or people no one can account for,” he said.

<h3>Wike shrug off protest against demolition in FCT</h3>

Despite <a data-link-role-code="open_new_tab" href="https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/protests-in-abuja-as-wikes-demolitions-leave-many-residents-homeless/n0s1e16">resistance from civil society groups,</a> Wike maintained that no amount of “blackmail, intimidation, or threats” would deter the government from taking action.

The minister also directed the community to appoint five representatives to meet with FCT officials on Tuesday to discuss ways to assist the displaced residents.

Representing the occupants, Abba Garu acknowledged that their settlement on the unoccupied land was meant to be temporary.

He pleaded for government support in finding alternative shelter, assuring that the community would not rebuild their homes if removed.

Wike’s stance underscores the administration’s commitment to addressing security issues in Abuja, even as it confronts the challenges of displacement among informal settlers.

<h2>The recent demolition of homes in the Ruga settlement along Airport Road in Abuja has sparked public outcry, as residents took to the streets on Friday, November 8, demanding that Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike be held accountable for the destruction of their community. </h2>

Protesters, led by lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju, accused Wike’s task force, known as “Operation Sweep,” of heavy-handed tactics that have left scores of residents homeless.

Adeyanju condemned the demolition, highlighting that homes were burned and property worth millions was destroyed.

“There is no justification for this demolition. We appeal to President Bola Tinubu to consider the plight of the displaced residents, who are barely surviving,” Adeyanju said.

Many of those affected, he explained, had already been forced out of their homes in northern states such as Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe due to insecurity, leaving them in a precarious situation.

“These demolitions are excessive,” he continued, “and Mr. President needs to act to prevent further harassment of the people. We are sounding a warning to those in government that peace is only achievable if the poor are allowed to live peacefully. When the poor cannot sleep, it affects everyone.”

Vincent Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMark, joined the protests and criticised the government for ignoring the needs of the less fortunate.

“This is strange,” he remarked. “The repercussions of this will have a heavy toll on Abuja. These people have been rendered homeless amid the ongoing hardship in the country. They are evicting these people without compensating them. It is sad that the elite think the poor are not part of society.”

The protesters urged President Tinubu to halt further demolitions and prevent land reallocations that would favour the wealthy.

'Wike must go': Protest rocks Abuja over mass demolitions by FCT minister

<h2>The Nigeria Democratic Front (NDF) has issued a stern rebuke to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, urging him to focus on the urgent issues affecting Abuja rather than using his office for personal political battles. </h2>

The NDF statement, released on Saturday, October 26 and signed by Spokesman Engr Ikenna Ellis Ezenekwe, condemned Wike's alleged prioritisation of political feuds in Rivers State over the pressing security and educational challenges facing Abuja residents.

"The capital is facing critical challenges that require a steady, committed leader," the NDF declared, pointing to a concerning rise in kidnapping incidents and school dropout rates.

The group cites statistics showing a 35% increase in out-of-school children in the FCT over the past two years, which they attribute to Wike's lack of focus on developmental issues.

The group further criticised Wike for allegedly using federal resources to fuel political vendettas in Rivers State, where he has ongoing disputes with the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and local officials.

"It is unbecoming of a Federal Minister to prioritise his personal political vendettas over public duty," the NDF stated, accusing Wike of using his position for "brinkmanship and divisive politics."

The NDF warned that Wike's actions could damage the credibility of the All Progressives Congress (APC)- led administration, noting his alleged attempts to interfere in local governance in Rivers State and to halt monthly federal allocations to local government areas.

"Nigerians are weary of political theatrics. "The FCT deserves a leader focused on solutions, not distractions. It's time to face your duties, Wike — or you step aside," they stated.

<h2>The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has appointed Commissioner Tunji Disu as the new head of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command. </h2>

Disu, previously in charge of the Rivers State Police Command, will take over from Peter Opara, who has been redeployed to the Delta State Police Command.

The reshuffle also sees Commissioner Abaniwonda Olufemi moving from Delta State to assume command in Rivers State.

In a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP emphasised that the changes were part of an effort "to strategically emplace a Police Force well efficient for effective policing."

The Police Service Commission approved the redeployment of four other Commissioners of Police to various state commands.

CP Danladi Nda will now oversee Abia State Command, CP Olanrewaju Ishola Olawale has been posted to Lagos State Command, CP Anthonia Adaku Uche-Anya will manage Ebonyi State, and CP Festus Eribo will head Akwa-Ibom State Command.

The IGP highlighted that these postings reflect the police leadership's commitment to "maximum utilisation of human resources available to the Force" and the goal of ensuring the safety of citizens across Nigeria.

Egbetokun urged the newly appointed commissioners to adopt innovative measures to address security challenges in their areas and to align with ongoing police reforms.

"The progress of the Nigeria Police Force and the growth of the country in general are deeply connected," he said, urging the CPs to show diligence in their duties.
