<h2>Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has addressed concerns over Lagos's position as Nigeria's most indebted state, assuring residents that the debt level is well within sustainable limits. </h2>

Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today, Sanwo-Olu highlighted Lagos's robust financial management, stating, "The standard debt ratio we are meant to meet is about 40%, but today, we are around 28-29%, so we are not even close to the threshold."

Sanwo-Olu positioned the debt as a necessary investment in the state's growth, noting that Lagos's debt-to-revenue ratio remains safely below the national benchmark of 40%.

According to him, Lagos's debt, currently standing at ₦2 trillion, reflects prudent financial management and growth potential.

"This ₦2 trillion debt figure is just a number," he argued, adding, "Lagos has the capacity to manage up to ₦20 trillion."

The governor emphasised that Lagos's budget has grown significantly over recent years, with the state now working with ₦2.3 trillion budget, up from ₦620 billion when his administration took office.

"By the end of this year, we expect to close at about ₦2.5 trillion," he said, highlighting a strong 95% budget performance rate annually.

Sanwo-Olu's statements follow a National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) report, which cited Lagos as Nigeria's highest debtor with ₦929.41 billion in domestic debt.

The governor, however, remains optimistic, asserting that "our investments today will yield returns tomorrow."

Amidst ongoing debates on Nigeria's debt sustainability, he reassured Lagosians that the state is "on a strong financial footing" and fully capable of servicing its debt responsibly.

<h1>Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered an immediate investigation into the shootings at Lekki, hours after he imposed a curfew in the state.</h1>

Men dressed in military gear opened fire on unarmed protesters at the Lekki toll gate around 7pm on Tuesday, October 20, leaving many dead, injured and hospitalised.

The lights and security cameras were turned off before the shootings began.

"Members of the Nigerian army pulled up on us and they started firing. They were shooting, they were firing straight at us and a lot of people got hit. I just barely survived," says Akinbosola Ogunsanya, who was at the scene of the incident.

The protesters have been <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/abuja-thugs-attack-endsars-protesters-in-capital-city/9eeqhk6">calling for an end to police brutality</a> since October 4; and had blocked the Lekki-Epe toll gate, Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge and other major roads in Lagos, while staging sit-in, candle-lit processions for victims of police brutality.&nbsp;

The protests had turned violent and fatal in Lagos and across the country, however, with hoodlums hijacking the marches and <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/endsars-police-stations-burnt-in-lagos/ttl936k">burning down police stations</a> for effect.&nbsp;

Sanwo-Olu<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/endsars-sanwo-olu-imposes-curfew-as-protests-turn-violent/c8z6k42"> announced a 24-hour curfew</a> at noon of October 20 in a bid to curtail the violence and halt the anarchy.&nbsp;

The governor&nbsp;initially announced that the curfew would commence at 4pm. This was later moved to 9pm.

The men in military gear opened fire on the unarmed protesters two hours before the curfew was billed to kick off.

Reports say at least 10 people died during the shooting.

Sanwo-Olu, who said he never gave the order, added that he’s visited the scene of the incident and hospitals.

“This is the toughest night of our lives as forces beyond our direct control have moved to make dark notes in our history, but we will face it and come out stronger,” the governor said.

“I've just concluded visits to hospitals with victims of this unfortunate shooting incident at Lekki.

“It has taken me this long to make a statement because I have to prioritize the welfare of the victims of this very sad incident.”

Sanwo-Olu also said he’s going to address residents of the state formally at dawn.

“There are currently 10 patients at the General Hospital, 11 at Reddington and 4 at Vedic; with mild to moderate levels of injuries while 2 are receiving intensive medical care.&nbsp;

“3 patients have been discharged and we will continue to monitor and ensure all patients get the best care.

“As the governor of our state, I recognize the buck stops at my table and I will work with the federal government to get to the root of this unfortunate incident and stabilise all security operations to protect the lives of our residents.&nbsp;

“I will give a state broadcast in the morning,” he added.

The shootings have been condemned by all sane voices in Nigeria and abroad.

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki, said “this is not the Nigeria that we hope to leave for the next generation. Our young people are the future of our country. This is not the Nigeria we have worked for, striven for, prayed for and have sacrificed for.

“Dialogue is the only logical option in the current situation and not violence. Dialogue may take a longer time to work and it may appear frustrating. Still, as a leading member in the comity of nations, violent silencing of protesting youths cannot be an option for Nigeria.”

More than 30 people have now been reported dead across the country since the protests were reignited penultimate week.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Lekki-Ikoyi toll was set on fire on Tuesday night; with vandals damaging surrounding property and businesses in the area.

Cars parked at the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) just beside the toll, are also being burnt at the time of reporting.

Anti-riot police officers have been deployed round the country to curtail the violence.

"As a government that is alive to its responsibility and has shown a commitment to the movement #ENDSARS, we will not watch and allow anarchy in our dear state.

"I, therefore, hereby impose a 24-hour curfew on all parts of the state as from 4pm today, 20th October, 2020. Nobody, except essential service providers and first responders must be found on the streets," the governor declared.

Some 20 people have been killed across Nigeria since the protests commenced on October 4, 2020, under the 'End SARS' banner.

“Our attention has been drawn to the needless and irresponsible politicising of the #EndSARS nationwide protest by the opposition PDP.

“It will be recalled that the Lagos State Government since the commencement of the protest march around different parts of the state has been supportive.

“The Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his deputy have taken turns to address the protesters, identifying with the issues at stake and assuring of the state government sympathy.

“The governor, in keeping with his promise, went ahead to present the terms of the resolution of the crisis to President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja,” Oladejo said.

“The #EndSARS protest seeks to enforce this provision within the ambit of the citizens fundamental human right to life and dignity.

“As a party, we are all concerned about the incessant incidents of police brutality which largely remain unchecked.

“There’s no doubt that no one is immune against the lawlessness of a police force trained and sustained by the taxpayers money.”

He said, however, the recent turn of events at the protest today gave serious cause for concern with the attack launched by hoodlums on armless and peaceful protesters.

Oladejo said that such attack was in bad taste.

“The attempt in the social media, sponsored by the opposition PDP, to hold the state government responsible is to say the least, the height of bitter politics.

“However, our investigation has revealed that the PDP would like to take advantage of the spate of protest to cause mayhem because of the October bye-elections in the Lagos East Senatorial District.

He called on law enforcement agencies to be alive to their responsibility to protect the citizens of the state from any untoward development that could disrupt peaceful co-existence.

He urged the opposition party to revert to issue based campaign.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the PDP in a statement earlier indicted Sanwo-Olu over the attack, giving him 24 hours to fish out the hoodlums that attacked the protesters in Lagos.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday decried the alleged politisation of #EndSARS protests by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as “irresponsible.”

<h1>Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has explained why public and private schools in the state may not be reopened anytime soon.&nbsp;</h1>

Two weeks ago, Sanwo-Olu said that guidelines for reopening schools will be made public in the state.

But on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, the governor said the guidelines for school reopening are not yet ready.&nbsp;

He said this during the 15th press briefing held at the State House in Marina to give updates on Lagos COVID-19 response.

The governor maintained that schools cannot be allowed to reopen with the increasing cases of COVID-19 in the state.

“Regarding the educational sector, I did mention that by now, we will be expressing a full guideline. Those guidelines are not ready yet because of the engagements we are having with the various stakeholders in that sector. But we will need to continue to encourage the online learning that we have.

“That has started extensively with our higher institutions. We are encouraging other private sectors as well to use as much online capability as a form of intervention in the educational sector until the statistics that we have subside and we are at a stage that all of these schools can reopen again,”&nbsp;he said.

As of Tuesday, June 16, 2020, the total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Lagos was 7,461.

He said the frontline health and emergency workers had paid great sacrifices in giving their all to the response in containing the Coronavirus pandemic in Lagos state.

The governor honoured leaders of various medical teams deployed to isolation facilities across the state, presenting them with plaques in appreciation of their sacrifices in the battle against the pandemic.

The 10 health workers who&nbsp;received the plaques represented over 800 personnel deployed by the state to the frontline in the battle against COVID-19.

Sanwo-Olu described the health personnel as ”a dedicated team of professionals”, whose commitment and selflessness, helped the government to properly manage the healthcare sector in a critical period.

”The current pandemic ravaging cities and communities all over the world is something we have not seen in the last 100 years.

”As the epicentre of the outbreak in the country, Lagos has taken charge and offered the leadership required in the response to stop the virus.

‘Each team of medical personnel deployed has played their roles well and we will not forget your sacrifices. On behalf of the people and government, I thank all frontline workers for their sacrifices,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu said the period of health emergency had given the state an opportunity to appraise its emergency response mechanism and the need to overhaul the public health infrastructure.

He said that his administration would not leave anything to chance to prepare the state for future health emergencies, as lessons learnt would lead to changes in the handling of infectious diseases to prevent lapses in future responses.

”It is not only about COVID-19, but about the entire health infrastructure. We have taken lessons from the response toward containing the virus and we are taking the lessons beyond the pandemic.

”As a government, we will not leave anything to chance; we will continue to raise the bar.

”In the revision of the state’s 2020 Budget, it is only health sector that has seen growth in their numbers, both in capital and recurrent expenditures.

”We believe the sector needs all critical support around improving the skills of personnel and facilities, providing infrastructure and ensuring technology is playing lead role in managing health crisis.

”We have dedicated teams of medical personnel and I’m convinced we will survive this pandemic,” the governor said.

He re-emphasised the need for residents to keep to public health guidelines issued by the state government, adding that the use of face masks in public places and keeping social distancing remained compulsory in the state.

Presenting the health workers for the honour, Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said the team leaders had displayed uncommon passion and commitment in discharging their duties in the period of public health crisis.

Those honoured include a Principal Medical Officer 1, at Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Dr. Sunday Adesola; an Apex Nurse at Mainland General Hospital in Yaba, Mrs Basirat Adeoye; a Pharmacist, Mr Folarin Amosun; a renowned virologist, Prof. Sunday Omilabu; and a medical waste cleaner, Mr Olufemi Akinade.

Others are,&nbsp;Dr. Bisola Adebayo, a Consultant Public Health and Community Medicine Physician; Mr Olanrewaju Aladetuyi, a laboratory scientist; Mrs Abiola Adeloju, a hospital administrator; Mr Alaba Anago, an ambulance driver, and Mr Tajudeen Bankole, a gatekeeper at the Mainland General Hospital in Yaba&nbsp;

<h1>Kabiru, 53, spits onto the marshy, grimy tarmac beneath his rickety yellow mini-van, yanks his face mask off to wipe his watery nostrils with one hand, and stretches slimy palms above the passengers to hand the conductor behind him a crumpled mass of dirty bank notes for use as ‘change.’</h1>

His eyes are bloodshot and daring; and he reeks of cheap alcohol.

For the rest of the journey from Mile 2 to Oshodi in mainland Lagos, Kabiru leaves his mask hanging from his chin, while his nostrils and mouth are left open for all the droplets in the world.

“I need to be able to breathe well,” he yells in an angry tone to one passenger in a black, over-sized suit who points out that he’s using the mask the wrong way.

His conductor, a balding man in his 40s with a white singlet that has turned brown round the armpits from overuse, also leaves his mask hanging on his chin while calling out bus-stops for passengers who have been crammed onto wooden chairs as always, with no regard for the physical distancing protocol.

Kabiru, his conductor and a host of other commercial drivers and conductors in Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous city and epicenter of the novel coronavirus, regard the mask as a decorative piece of clothing, only useful for averting the questioning gaze from law enforcement personnel who know no better.

Most passengers who use commercial buses to get to workplaces or for regular commute round the city, also leave their noses and mouths hanging open, with the face mask hanging loosely from the chin.&nbsp;

This sight is also pretty common as you take a brisk walk past suburban dwellers on the mainland and island of a thrumming, densely populated city.

“I am not used to it just yet,” confesses Jide, a carpenter on Akerele street in Surulere. “It chokes the hell out of me,” he gesticulates furiously, before dipping a hand in a pocket of his dusty trousers to bring out a mask, a dirty piece of fabric, which he would go on to place on his chin.

In April, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced that using the <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/sanwo-olu-confirms-compulsory-wearing-of-face-masks-in-lagos/xtdq3pr">face mask would become mandatory</a> in the weeks ahead, as confirmed cases of COVID-19 continue to spike in his city.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Dear Lagosians, even as we observe the lockdown, we are kicking off #MaskUpLagos; the compulsory wearing of face masks in Lagos. Face masks help to protect us from droplets and secretions from coughing, sneezing etc, as not everyone that is infected (with COVID-19) will show symptoms,” the governor said.

Health protocols like physical and social distancing have also been repeatedly reeled out by federal and state governments around the country in a bid to curb the spread of the contagious virus.&nbsp;

<h1>Lagos has discharged five more patients who have fully recovered from coronavirus.</h1>

The State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the patients were discharged from the Mainland Infectious Diseases Hospital.

The governor announced this via his Twitter handle on Thursday, April 16, 2020.&nbsp;

The patients, who according to the governor included three females and two males were released after they tested negative twice.

This brings the number of patients who have recovered from coronavirus in Lagos to 90.&nbsp;

However, earlier on Thursday, the Lagos government has announced<a href="https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/coronavirus-lagos-announces-3-new-deaths/7ggx6qn"> three new coronavirus-related deaths in the state.</a>

The state’s Commissioner for Health,&nbsp;Akin Abayomi&nbsp;said the deceased are all males aged 51, 52 and 62.

According to the commissioner, the state has now recorded 10 coronavirus related death.

A total of 90 coronavirus patients have been discharged in Lagos.

5 more patients recover from coronavirus in Lagos

<h1>Lagos State has discharged 16 more patients who have successfully recovered from coronavirus.</h1>

While announcing this on Twitter, the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu said, 16 patients including three foreigners were discharged from two isolation centres on Wednesday, April 15, 2020.&nbsp;

The tree foreigners according to Sanwo-Olu are British, Chinese and Polish citizens.

This brings the number of patients who have recovered and discharged from Lagos isolation centres to 85.

The governor said the 16 patients comprising of 14 males and two females all tested negative twice before they were discharged.

Sanwo-Olu tweeted,&nbsp;“Good people of Lagos, I have more great news from our isolation facilities. 16 persons; 14 males and 2 females including 3 foreigners — 1 British, 1 Chinese and 1 Polish citizen have been discharged to join the society.

“The patients; 14 from IDH, Yaba and 2 from Onikan Isolation centre have fully recovered and tested negative twice consecutively to&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/COVID19?src=hashtag_click">#COVID19</a>. This brings the number of patients successfully managed and discharged from our facilities to 85.

“As our front line health workers record successes in the battle against&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/COVID19?src=hashtag_click">#COVID19</a>, we are duty-bound as citizens to break the chain of transmission of the infection by staying safe at home, practising social distancing and adopting the highest possible personal hygiene”.

Lagos has the highest cases of coronavirus in Nigeria with 214 cases as of Tuesday, April 14, 2020.

The State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu said four more patients including an 11-year-old boy were discharged from Lagos State Isolation facilities on Saturday, April 11, 2020.

While announcing this on Twitter, Sanwo-Olu in a series of tweet said the patients were discharged after testing negative twice to the virus.&nbsp;

Earlier, the state Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi announced <a href="https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/lagos-records-4th-coronavirus-death-as-another-patient-dies-in-private-hospital/94stnk2">the fourth coronavirus death</a> in the state.&nbsp;

Abayomi said the patient died of coronavirus complications in a private hospital.

As of Friday, April 10, 2020, Lagos had 166 cases of the infection.&nbsp;
