Here are the 7 African Grammy winners of all time

A list of the Africans to have won the most prestigious award in world music.

The Grammy Award is the most prestigious award in world music.

It is awarded to the best singers in the world in different categories and over the years, a number of African musicians have been awarded the prize for their immense contribution to the world of music.

From Benin's songbird Angelique Kidjo to the very talented Youssou N’Dour from Senegal, here now is the list of the top-rated African Grammy winners of all time:

Wouter Kellerman (1 Grammy)

Wouter Kellerman is a South African flutist and music composer. The 56-year-old won the Grammy for Awards for Best New Age Album in 2015.

With his classical training as a foundation, Kellerman has fixed his attention on World and Roots music, exploring the uniqueness of the instrument, mixing classical and contemporary tunes

Tinariwen (1 Grammy)

This band of Tuareg musicians was formed in 1979 in Tamanrassset, Algeria but they are from the northern region of Mali.

They won the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album at the 54th Grammy Awards, in 2011 with their fifth album, Tassili.

Youssou N’Dour (1 Grammy)

Senegalese Youssou N’Dour is a singer, percussionist, songwriter, composer, occasional actor, businessman and a politician.

He toured internationally for thirty years, winning his first Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album, in 2005. In 2004, Rolling Stone described him as, “perhaps the most famous singer alive” in Senegal and much of Africa.

Soweto Gospel Choir (2 Grammys)

The Soweto Gospel Choir is a band based in Soweto, South Africa and made up of more than 30 members.

They won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album in 2007 and 2008 respectively with their albums Blessed and African Spirit.

In 2010 composer Christopher Tin’s song “Baba Yetu”, which featured the band, won the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists.

Ali Farka Touré (2 Grammys)

The late Ali Farka Toure hailed from Mali, and he was a super talented singer cum multi-instrumentalist.

He earned his first Grammy in 1994 for his collaborative album with Ry Cooder. His second Grammy also came from another collaborative album with Toumani Diabete.

Angelique Kidjo (3 Grammys)

Born Angélique Kpasseloko Hinto Hounsinou Kandjo Manta Zogbin Kidjo,but popularly known as Angélique Kidjo, is a Beninese, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and activist noted for her diverse musical influences and creative music videos.

Her most recent Grammy was awarded to her in 2016 for her 2015 album, Sings, while the others were awarded to her back in 2007 and 2014 respectively.

Angelique’s albums titled Djin Djin and EVE earned her the coveted award in two different occasions.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo (4 Grammys

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a South African male choral group that sings in the vocal styles of isicathamiya and mbube.

Their collaboration with Paul Simon on his album, Graceland made this band ito worldwide fame, and has won multiple awards, including 4 Grammy Awards.

Their hit song, Shaka Zulu, afforded them the international spotlight and received a warm welcome by the American audience paving way for more successes for them. Shaka Zulu won a Grammy in 1988 for Best Traditional Folk Recording.
